Massey named to Portsmouth Invitational All-Tournament team

PORTSMOUTH, Va. Kansas State senior Jeremiah Massey averaged a team-best 18.0 points and 7.7 rebounds in helping the Norfolk Sports Club to a fourth-place finish at the Portmouth Invitational over the weekend.
The Portsmouth Sports Club won the tournament with a 101-91 victory over Holiday Inn Portsmouth on Saturday, while the Norfolk Naval Shipyard upended the Massey-led Norfolk Sports Club in the third-place game.
Chuck Hayes was named the most valuable player of the tournament, while Massey was selected to the 12-member all-tournament team. Massey was joined by Hayes, Quemont Greer (DePaul), Jared Homan (Iowa State), Mindaugas Katelynas (Chattanooga), David Logan (Indianapolis), David Lucas (Oregon State), Jason Maxiell (Cincinnati), Ivan McFarlin (Oklahoma State), Taylor Coppenrath (Vermont), Omar Thomas (UTEP) and Andre Owens (Houston).
A second team All-Big 12 selection this past season, Massey averaged a team-high 18.0 points on 55.3 percent (21-of-38) shooting from the field to go with 7.7 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks in 25.0 minutes per game. He scored a team-tying 16 points on 6-of-15 field goals to go with eight rebounds in Norfolk’s first round win over MD Designs on Wednesday (April 6). Massey followed with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting and seven rebounds in the team’s second-round loss to Holiday Inn Portsmouth on Friday (April 8). In the team’s finale against Norfolk Naval Shipyard on Saturday (April 9), he came off the bench with a team-high 20 points on 7-of-10 field goals to go with eight rebounds and a team-best four blocks in just 24 minutes.
Massey’s team consisted of two conference Players the Year (Coppenrath and Jenkins) and seven all-conference honorees. Besides Coppenrath, Jenkins and Little, he was joined by Brandon Gay (San Diego), Jason McKrieth (Rice), T.J. Thompson (George Washington) and Luqman Jaaber (Virginia Union). Massey was one of just five Big 12 players in the tournament, including McFarlin, Jared Homan (Holiday Inn Portsmouth), Ronald Ross (Sales System LTD) and Aaron Miles (Norfolk Naval Shipyard).
Operating since 1953, the Portsmouth Invitational is one of the preeminent NBA pre-draft camps with approximately 200 NBA representatives in attendance. It is the only postseason event prior to the Chicago Draft camp. The four-day tournament consists of 11 games with the 64 invited college seniors playing on eight teams of eight players. The event is sponsored by the Portsmouth (Va.) Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Volunteer Committee.
