O'Brien Featured Guest of Basketball Coaching Clinic

Sep 08, 2005 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. Legendary junior college coach Joe O’Brien will be the featured speaker at the annual Kansas State men’s basketball coaching clinic, which is set for Saturday, October 22 at Bramlage Coliseum.

The clinic, which will be held prior to the Kansas State-Texas A&M football game, will include presentations by O’Brien and Wildcat head coach Jim Wooldridge, practice observation and an open scrimmage.  There will also be a question and answer session with the coaches.

The cost of the clinic is $95, which not only includes admission to the clinic, but also a ticket to the Kansas State-Texas A&M football game, refreshments, parking, a pre-game meal and practice observation.  The cost without the game ticket is $55.

O’Brien established himself as one of the most successful head coaches in the history of junior college basketball during an eight-year stint at Southeastern (Iowa) Community College. He led the Black Hawks to a 213-64 (.769) record during his tenure, which included three NCJAA national championships (2000, 2003, 2004) and four Region XI titles.  A three-time national coach of the year, O’Brien is only the third coach in junior college history to win three national titles.  In all, he coached eight All-Americans, three NJCAA Division I Players of the Year and four Academic All-Americans.

Prior to his stint at Southeastern, O’Brien spent five successful years as the head basketball coach at Lincoln (Ill.) College, where he compiled a 313-118 (.715) record.  A native of Macomb, Ill., he broke into the college ranks as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana before becoming an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under Wooldridge at Central Missouri State from 1985-90.

O’Brien was also a head coach in the Louisiana high school ranks for four seasons, where he coached former NBA all-star and current Detroit Pistons President of Basketball Operations, Joe Dumars, at Natchitoches Central High School.

Individuals can register for the coaching clinic by calling the men’s basketball office toll free at (800) 651.4667 or online at www.kstatesports.com.
