Turnovers Plague Cats in 39-20 Loss
Nov 18, 2006 | Football
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- Kansas State turned the ball over six times on the day, which led to 30 Kansas points, as the Wildcats dropped their final game of the regular season, 39-20, to the Jayhawks at sold-out Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a 7-5 overall mark, 4-4 in Big 12 play, for their best record since the 2003 season and now await word on their bowl destination.
Josh Freeman, the freshman sensation who accounted for four touchdowns in last week's upset of Texas, lost three fumbles and was intercepted three times by a Kansas pass defense ranked 117th in the country.
It was the first time since 1917 that both teams came into this state rivalry on winning streaks of at least two games. And a crowd of 51,821 -- the largest in the 85-year history of Memorial Stadium -- was on hand.
Scott Webb kicked a career-best four field goals for the Jayhawks.
Anthony Webb ran 42 yards for a touchdown with Kansas' third interception, giving the Jayhawks a 33-20 lead with 7:57 left in the fourth quarter.
In the final seconds of the first half, James McClinton knocked the ball out of Freeman's grasp in the end zone and Russell Brorsen recovered for the TD.
Cornish, the Big 12's rushing leader, had touchdown runs of 13 yards following Aqib Talib's interception in the first quarter and 12 yards after Wayne Wilder's fumble recovery in the fourth.
Leon Patton rushed for 102 yards for Kansas State, which is bowl-eligible for the first time since 2003. It was the first time in 24 games Kansas had given up a 100-yard rushing performance.
Kerry Meier, Kansas' redshirt freshman quarterback, also had a rough night. He was intercepted twice in the first half, once in the end zone. And he was on the Wildcats 6 on Kansas' first possession of the second half when he fumbled the ball to Antwon Moore.
Webb kicked field goals of 38, 49, 41 and 35 yards.
Kansas State's James Johnson returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, giving the Wildcats a school-record three kickoff returns this season.
Freeman, the Big 12's offensive player of the week the two previous weeks, came into the game after hitting 55 of his last 77 passes for 681 yards and six touchdowns. Against the Jayhawks, he was 23-for-44 for 244 yards. His longest pass came on the first play of the game, a 66-yard gainer to tight end Jeron Mastrud that set up a 21-yard field goal by Jeff Snodgrass.
