K-State Smashes Cats for Cans Record

MANHATTAN, Kan. For the second straight year, Kansas State student-athletes set an all-time record for donations during the Wildcats’ 11th-annual Cats for Cans food drive prior to K-State’s football game vs. Nebraska on Oct. 14.

Pushing grocery carts and toting money buckets through the parking lot of KSU Stadium prior to the game, Kansas State student-athletes collected 6,411 pounds of canned food, which is almost double what they collect to set the record in 2005 of 3,666 pounds. The Wildcats also colleted monetary donations from the K-State faithful totaling $6,628, surpassing last year’s total of $5,308.

All proceeds from the event go to benefit the Flint Hills Breadbasket. The Flint Hills Breadbasket assists in providing meals for over 1,000 families throughout Manhattan and the surrounding area.

Cats for Cans is just one of the many community service projects that allow Kansas State student-athletes to give back to their community in a positive and influential way.
