Cats Drop Heartbreaker at Mizzou
Feb 12, 2006 | Men's Basketball

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Cartier Martin's 3-point attempt at the buzzer was a bit too strong and Kansas State dropped its seventh game of the season by five points or less as the Wildcats fell to Missouri, 74-71, Sunday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.
David Hoskins led all scorers with 20 points, Martin added 19 and Lance Harris poured in 18 off the bench for Kansas State (13-8, 4-6), which slipped to 1-6 on the road.
The Wildcats, who played without Head Coach Jim Wooldridge for the second straight game following successful neck surgery on Wednesday, also got seven points from Dramane Diarra and a season-high 10 assists from Clent Stewart.
Marshall Brown finished with 18 points, including two free throws with 25 seconds to play that proved to be the game winners, as Missouri (11-11, 4-7) snapped a six game losing streak with Assistant Coach Melvin Watkins at the helm in placed of Quinn Snyder, who resigned his post on Friday afternoon.
Jimmy McKinney, whose two free throws with 7.7 seconds remaining provided the final margin of victory, scored 16 points and Kevin Young chipped in with 14 points for the Tigers, who won for the first time since defeating Kansas in overtime on Jan. 16.
Six ties and two lead changes highlighted a frenetic second half during which neither team led by more than four points over the final 10 minutes.
A layup by Hoskins made it 70-68 Mizzou with 1:04 to play and the Wildcats had a chance to tie or take the lead after coming up with a stop on the Tigers' next possession. However, Martin could not convert from 3-point range and the Cats were force to foul Jason Horton.
Horton, a 52 percent foul shoot, missed both attempts, but Brown collected the offensive rebound after the second attempt and hit both foul shots to push Missouri's lead back to four points at 72-68.
A 3-pointer by Martin with 10 seconds to go kept the Wildcats hopes alive, before McKinney scored the final points of the game from the line.
Kansas State trailed by as many as six midway through the first half after Mizzou used a 10-3 run to take a 18-12 lead.
The Wildcats responded by holding the Tigers without a point for the next five minutes and reeled off nine straight points to forge a 21-18 edge.
A Martin 3-pointer with just under a minute remaining in the half gave K-State a 29-28 lead, but McKinney answered with a triple of his own with 25 seconds to go and Missouri held a 31-29 advantage at the break.
Kansas State wraps up a brief two-game road trip Wednesday at Texas Tech. The game will tip a 7 p.m. (CST) and will be televised by Fox Sports Midwest.
