MANHATTAN, Kan. - The K-State co-ed cheerleading squad will be highlighted during CBS's broadcast of the National Cheerleaders Association's Collegiate National Championships on Saturday, April 22, at 1 p.m.
The Kansas State cheer squad competed at nationals in Daytona Beach, Fla., against 18 other teams and returned home with a seventh place finish for their routine that was choreographed by assistant coach Josh Anderson.
The cheerleaders qualified for the national championships in December via a videotape of their skills. During the video qualifications the cheerleaders finished seventh as well.
At the national championships, K-State's cheerleaders demonstrated their use of signs, flags, and megaphones for a crowd score that carried into the finals. The squad also performed a skill-based routine that lasted two minutes and 15 seconds.
The seventh place finish that the team notched in Florida compliments the eighth-place finish by the all-female team in January.
"We had a great performance during the finals," said head cheer coach Al Enlow. "Having not been to nationals since 1995, K-State definitely put itself back in the national limelight. We are proud to be K-Staters and want the rest of the country to know it."
The Wildcat cheer team will be included in an upcoming issue of American Cheerleading Magazine with samples from their routine. Some of the cheerleaders will be included in the fitness section of the magazine as well.
In other cheerleading news, the squad recently learned a writer from the New York Observer & Jane Magazine will follow the Wildcat cheerleading program for the next year to gather information for a book she is writing that will be published by Simon & Schuster.
Tryouts for both of the Kansas State cheerleading squads will take place on April 30th at 10 a.m. in Bramlage Coliseum and are open to the public.
