The win gave the Wildcats their first conference series win of the season and also marked the second straight year they have reached the 30-win plateau. The last time two
Cowart (6-7) held Baylor to one run, which was unearned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. K-State starting pitchers have struck out 15 batters and walked none in the first two games of the series.
Bryan Peterson worked a perfect ninth inning to earn his seventh save of the season and his 12th career save. His seven saves move him into a tie for third place in the single-season record books, while his 12 saves move him into a tie for second place all-time.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth as Joe Roundy led off with an infield single before Barrett Rice followed with a fielder’s choice on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt. Drew Biery followed with his third homer of the season and third in the last three games to give K-State a 3-0 lead.
Baylor broke through for its first run of the game in the seventh as Kevin Sevigny singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Then, Beamer Weems sliced a double down the line in left to score Sevigny and cut the Wildcat lead to 3-1.
Cory VanAllen (6-5) suffered the loss for Baylor after giving up three runs on six hits over 6.0 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Joe Roundy led the Wildcat offense with two hits, giving him 26 multi-hit games on the season, while Biery’s two-run homer provided a team-high two runs driven in on the day. Biery now has recorded eight hits, three of which were homers, and 12 RBI’s in his last three games.
