Afeli, Stewart Named Academic All-Big 12

DALLAS, Texas Kansas State senior forward Serge Afeli and junior guard Clent Stewart were among 23 players named to the 2007 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Basketball Team as announced by the league office Thursday.

A first team selection last season, Stewart became the first Wildcat to repeat with academic all-league honors since Ivan Sulic did it in 2001 and 2002. The team’s starting point guard for much of the season, he is averaging 6.5 points on 39.6 percent shooting, including 35.2 percent from 3-point range, to go with a team-best 2.7 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 25.1 minutes per game. Stewart has seen action in all 30 games with 19 starts. He is majoring in management information systems.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league men’s basketball team consisted of 10 first team members combined with 13 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfer are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
