Martin adds Doug Edwards to staff

MANHATTAN, Kan. Kansas State men’s basketball coach Frank Martin announced Wednesday the addition of former NBA player Doug Edwards to the program as director of student-athlete development.

“Doug will be a tremendous addition to our program,” said Martin. “I have known him for a long time dating back to our days at Miami Senior (High School). I know he will be great fit in our program and will help our players reach their full potential both on and off the court. He is a winner who has always represented himself in a first-class way.”

Edwards enjoyed a storied career at Florida State, where he led the Seminoles to 68-31 (.686) overall record and three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 1990-93. In just three seasons, he scored 1,604 points, averaging 17.2 per game, which ranks him fifth in school history. He is the only player in FSU history to score 500 or more points in three consecutive seasons. He also ranks fifth in career field goals (621) and sixth in career rebounding (788; 8.5 per game) in school history, while he is seventh in both career double-doubles (18) and career starts (93).

Edwards, along with future NBA draft picks Charlie Ward, Sam Cassell and Bob Sura, guided Florida State to within a game of the 1993 Final Four as a senior, as the group helped the Seminoles to a 25-10 overall record and a second-place finish in the ACC. Edwards averaged 18.3 points and 9.4 rebounds as a senior and was selected to the All-ACC second team.

Following his junior season, Edwards was selected with the 15^th overall pick in the first round of the 1993 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He averaged 2.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in three seasons with the Hawks (1993-95) and Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-96) before injuries shortened his playing career.

Edwards was named to the Florida State Sports Hall of Fame on Sept. 6, 2008.

Considered one of the most heralded recruits in Florida State history, Edwards is reunited with Martin, who helped coach him at Miami Senior High School from 1986-89. During his three-year playing career, he helped lead the Stingarees to a 104-6 (.946) overall record and two Class 4A State Championships (1986-87; 1988-89). As a senior, he led the squad to a 35-1 record, the Class 4A state title and a No. 2 final ranking in USA Today Super 25. He was the runner-up to Kenny Anderson for USA Today’s National High School Player of the Year as well as a McDonald’s All-American and Florida Mr. Basketball.

Edwards, 37, earned a bachelor’s degree in social science from Florida State in 2007.
