K-State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On their third slow start in a row…
“I thought we had one of our best practice Monday and yesterday was very good. D.J. [Johnson] went about half on Monday and Dean [Wade] went both days, which gave us some continuity. I just wrote on the board ‘no quotes, play hard, play with energy.’ We did not have that and let them dictate the tempo offensively. They scored very easy early. [Dixon] gets mad at their big kid and puts in [Karviar] Shepherd, who gets eight in the first few minutes. To our guys’ credit, we picked up the aggressiveness, disrupted them and got the lead at the end of the half.”
On the second half and beyond…
“I thought the start of the second half we did not play very well offensively. That is where we needed to stretch it out a little bit, but it was just back-and-forth from then on. You have to get stops down the stretch, you have to make free throws, you have to block-out on free throws and we did not do any of those. It is disappointing for our guys and we had our chances. I thought Kam [Stokes] had a good look on the last one. You could not get a better look than that, it just did not go in. We broke down defensively in the overtime and I am not sure why. A little bit of doubt, which I told them after that we cannot doubt. We have to believe and be the aggressor. There is no sense in playing passive. I kept telling ‘play to win’ and do not ‘play not to lose’ and there is a difference.”
On the turnovers…
“There was a little bit of impatience and we need to let things happen. They had turnovers, too. They had 22 and we had 20, but 21 assists on 25 field goals is a good sign. When we move the ball and made the right plays we were very good. We had other stretches where we just did not make good decisions.”
On if this is a gut-check for the team…
“They just lost four in a row. They came back so give them credit. Now, we lost three in a row and let us see what we can do. We are going to Baylor, with Kansas following that. All we can worry about is getting ready for Baylor and ourselves. They had six guys in double figures, and we had four, but we just did not have enough and obviously we just had too many turnovers.”
On what sets this loss apart from the others…
“You lost a home game in overtime, which is a gut-check. If we had just blocked out on the free throws, made our free throws, made a play, got a stop, we were right there. It is a game you have to find a way to win. This is a tough league and everyone plays hard. All of their games have been close, but it is a tough loss at home. We have nine games left and we have to play our butts off. We have to keep fighting and that is all that you can do. Believe and fight.”
TCU Head Coach Jamie Dixon
Opening statement…
“It was obviously an exciting game and I am excited for us to get a win from a very good team. They are a high RPI team, I know that. They have been taking care of business every game. It was great that we could come here and get this win. It was a high character win for us. It was great to see us making plays and to have our young guys make plays that we needed. We have not had that in a couple games down the stretch, but today it came around. This could help us going down the road here and I believe it will. They are a very good team. They obviously made shots and [Kamau] Stokes was terrific. For us we have been talking about firsts. We have been talking to our guys about how we have not beaten K-State in 19 years. Now we have to get ready for Texas, but obviously it was an exciting game.
On 3-pointers…
“We have been getting open, but we just have not shot it well. We were a high 3-point shooting team and then the stretch happened. They were probably more open in the previous games that we played. We have had shots but I just think we hit a stretch. We are normally a good 3-point shooting team. We have been pretty hard to guard as far as getting shots up. Our turnovers and poor shooting if anything has hurt us these last four games. They force turnovers and we know that.
On runs in the first half…
“It is just something we have to get through. We have had a stretch of these and what went wrong was they are good. They are going to make a run, but it should not be that long. We turn the ball over way too much and give transition baskets. It happened last game and this game. We have got to change it. We have always been a low turnover team and our numbers are significantly lower compared to the past. It is something that we have fought and that is the main thing. Our defense is not that bad, their offense is just good.”
On offensive rebounds…
“That is just something that we do and we have been doing that consistently throughout. We are one of the best teams at offensive rebounding in the country. It is something that we talk about and we felt we had to win the rebounding battle and we did. That was key for us on the road.”
On Vladimir Brodziansky…
“He was big down the stretch. The double team hurt him a bit and we got some turnovers out of it. We have really emphasized getting the ball to him these last couple of days. We kind of get away from stuff on stretches offensively. It is a product of new guys, a new place, a new coach, and playing good teams. He has to defend and rebound better. He is a hard guy to guard, especially when we have the four shooters around and we are making shots.
