Jaffrey in First, Cats in Third at Maryb S. Kauth Invitational
Oct 22, 2017 | Women's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Thanks to Connie Jaffrey's blistering 6-under par 66, the Kansas State women's golf team is in third place following the first round of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational on Sunday at the par-72, 6,450-yard Briggs Ranch Golf Club.
The Wildcats shot a 3-over par 291 in round one as they trail second-place TCU by only one stroke and are three shots ahead of host school UTSA.
Jaffrey tied her career-low round – which is also tied for the second-lowest round in school history – a mark she first hit during the first round of the Marilynn Smith/Sunflower Invitational last month. The Kilwinning, Scotland, native registered eight birdies on Monday, three more than anyone else in the field. She finished her round on fire with birdies on her final three holes and four of her last five.
"Connie had a great round of golf today," said head coach Kristi Knight "I am proud of the team and how they all hung in there. It was a great team effort."
Jaffrey is joined in the top 10 by freshman Ella Adams, who carded an even-par 72 to enter Monday's second round in a ninth-place tie.
Following Jaffrey and Adams were freshman Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry, who carded a 4-over par 76 and a 5-over par 77, respectively. Isaac enters the second round tied for 42nd, while McSherry will begin in a tie for 46th. Another freshman, Darby Deans, rounded out the Wildcat lineup by shooting an 8-over par 80 as she is currently tied for 63rd place.
Arkansas leads the field following a 7-under par 281 on Monday. Jaffrey will begin the second round with a three-stroke lead over a tie for second place and four strokes in front of a three-way tie for fourth.
The Maryb S. Kauth Invitational will resume Monday with the second round beginning at 8:30 a.m. Live results can be followed a www.birdiefire.com.
