K-State Places Record 33 on Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas State student-athletes continued to receive honors and accolades for their hard work in the classroom, as 33 Wildcats were named to the 2016-17 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team in an announcement by the conference office on Thursday.
In the five years of the award’s existence, K-State has placed 135 student-athletes on the list. The 33 honorees this year surpassed the previous school record of 30 following the 2015-16 academic year.
Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, student-athletes on the Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team must be new, first-time/incoming freshmen that have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial coursework and achieved a cumulative GPA of at least 3.00.
Additionally, the student-athlete must have participated in at least one of their team’s scheduled contests and must have been a member of their respective team for their sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment. The Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team as introduced in the 2012-13 academic year.
The Wildcats had five student-athletes earn the honor with a perfect 4.0 grade point average. The four recipients with 4.0 GPAs were: Helene Ingvaldsen (women’s track & field), Anna Keeley (women’s track & field), Tristan Peterson (baseball), Konstantina Romaiou (women’s track & field), Maureen Schick (volleyball).
The remaining honorees for the Wildcats on the 2016-17 Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team are: Kyle Ball (football), Baylee Bedard (women’s soccer), Will Brennan (baseball), Tania Chassot (women’s soccer), Sydney Collins (women’s track & field), Katie Condon (women’s track & field), Lauren Costello (rowing), Katie Cramer (women’s soccer), Tyler Eckberg (baseball), Jacob Eklund (men’s golf), Laramie Hall (women’s soccer), Luke Hauswirth (baseball), Travis Hodge (men’s track & field), Gabby Lavington (women’s track & field), Erin Lee (women’s track & field), Jared Marolf (baseball), Tyler McKay (baseball), Wurrie Njadoe (women’s track & field), Ariel Okorie (women’s track & field), Connor Rule (baseball), Elle Sandbothe (volleyball), Nicholas Skinner (men’s track & field), Xavier Sneed (men’s basketball), Noah Stevenson (men’s track & field), Lauren Taubert (women’s track & field), Cameron Thompson (baseball), Peyton Williams (women’s basketball) and Ashley Zane (women’s soccer)
K-State, a Tier 1 Carnegie Foundation Institution, has had another outstanding academic year in 2016-17, as the Wildcats saw 88 student-athletes receive their diplomas.
Kansas State student-athletes earned the following recognitions for their work in the classroom: 137 Academic All-Big 12 honors, Kersten Kober (volleyball) and Katie Brand (volleyball), Austin Budke (men’s basketball) and Shaelyn Martin (women’s basketball) were named CoSIDA Academic All-District 7 selections. Brand was a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, while Breanna Lewis and Kindred Wesemann were each among the 30 candidates for the women’s basketball Senior CLASS Award.
