A weekly summer update on current and former K-State baseball student-athletes.
SENIORS IN 2017-18
Kyle Barfield, El Dorado Broncos (Jayhawk League)
Barfield had two hits and an RBI in each game of a June 28 doubleheader with Derby. In six games last week, went 6-for-20 (.300) and drove in three runs. Through 25 games this summer, Barfield is hitting .255 (26-for-102) with five doubles, a home run and 11 runs batted in. He owns an on-base percentage of .325 while slugging .333, as the Broncos are 11-17 in the Jayhawk League this season.
Jake Biller, Superior Rough Riders (Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League)
Biller has helped the Rough Riders to 8-10 record in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League to begin the season (no stats available).
Hanz Harker, Springfield Sliders (Prospect League)
Harker had multiple hits in three of five games played last week, including a 3-for-5 effort against Terre Haute on June 27. On Sunday, he hit his fourth homer of the season along with a double and two runs scored For the week, Harker went 7-for-21 (.333) with two doubles, a home run, RBI and seven runs scored. His four homers are second on the team and he continues to lead the team with 22 RBI as the Springfield (Illinois) Sliders are 17-13 in the Prospect League.
Trent McMaster, Superior Rough Riders (Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League)
McMaster has helped the Rough Riders to 8-10 record in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League to begin the season (no stats available).
JUNIORS IN 2017-18
Matt Nerz, Syracuse Salt Cats (New York Collegiate Baseball League)
Nerz drove in a run and drew three walks last week in six games played. In 26 games with Syracuse, he is hitting .284 (21-for-74) with three doubles, a triple, home run and three RBI. He has registered five multi-hit games, including back-to-back two-hit games on June 22-23. Syracuse is 15-13 in the New York Collegiate Baseball League.
SOPHOMORES IN 2017-18
Will Brennan, Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska League)
Brennan is riding a six-game hitting streak, going 8-for-22 (364) with two RBI over that stretch to raise his average to .307 on the season (second-best on team). In 20 games, he has an on-base percentage of .398 with nine RBI, 14 runs and 12 walks drawn. He also made three appearances on the mound this season, posting a 1-1 record with three strikeouts and a 4.91 ERA (3.2 IP, 2 ER). Anchorage is 10-13 in the Alaska League.
Tyler Eckberg, Superior Rough Riders (Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League)
Eckberg has helped the Rough Riders to 8-10 record in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Baseball League to begin the season (no stats available).
Connor Rule, Jamestown Jammers (Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League)
Rule has hit safely in his last three games for the Jammers, going 4-for-9 with three RBI and three runs scored. He is hitting .261 (12-for-46) with two doubles and 10 runs batted in in 13 games for Jamestown. The Jammers are 22-5 and have won eight straight games in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.
Cameron Thompson, Anchorage Glacier Pilots (Alaska League)
Over his last seven games, Thompson hit .238 (5-for-21) with an RBI and three walks. In 22 games for the Glacier Pilots, Thompson is hitting .221 (15-for-68) with eight RBI and 10 runs scored. Thompson has also appeared once on the mound, throwing four shutout innings with two hits and three strikeouts in collecting a victory on June 11.
PRO CATS
Carlos Torres, Milwaukee Brewers
Torres picked up his fourth victory of the season for Milwaukee on June 20 against Miami, throwing two scoreless innings while allowing just one hit. So far in July, Torres has made two appearances and yielded two earned runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings. Torres owns a 4-4 record with one save for the Brewers in 2017 and leads the team in appearances with 42. In 44 2/3 innings pitched, he has allowed 22 earned runs for a 4.43 ERA with 36 strikeouts to 17 walks. As of July 5, the Brewers are in first place in the NL Central.
Evan Marshall, Seattle Mariners
Marshall was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners early in the 2017 season and has appeared in six games for the Mariners, totaling 7 2/3 innings with four strikeouts and allowing eight earned runs. He is currently on the 60-day disabled list after suffering a hamstring injury on May 5 against the Texas Rangers and is expected to be out until the All-Star Break.
Nick Martini, Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A, St. Louis Cardinals)
Over his last 10 games, Martini is hitting .378 (14-for-37) with six RBI for Triple-A Memphis, hitting safely in seven of his last eight games overall. Martini is coming off back-to-back multi-hit games, going 3-for-4 on Monday followed by a 2-for-5 effort Tuesday. After starting the season and hitting .263 in 23 games with Double-A Springfield, Martini was called up to Triple-A Memphis on May 6. In 48 games with the Redbirds, he is hitting .324 with three homers, three triples, 12 doubles and 26 RBI.
Kyle Hunter, Arkansas Travelers (Double-A, Seattle Mariners)
Hunter has split time this season between Triple-A Tacoma and Double-A Arkansas. He made two scoreless appearances last week for the Travelers, going 2 2/3 innings on June 29 before throwing an picking up his first victory on July 2 against Corpus Christi. In the two games, he gave up just two hits and one walk and has not allowed an earned run in his last four outings overall. He has now pitched in 11 games (one start) for Arkansas and has allowed nine earned runs in 19 1/3 innings (4.19 ERA) with 17 punchouts and five walks allowed. In seven appearances (two starts) for Tacoma earlier this season, he went 3-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 19 innings pitched with 13 strikeouts and four walks
Ross Kivett, Erie SeaWolves (Double-A, Detroit Tigers)
Kivett went 2-for-3 in each of his last two games with Erie (June 25-26). Now in 25 games with the SeaWolves, Kivett is batting .218 (17-for-78) with two homers, five doubles and four RBI. Kivett began 2017 with Class A Advanced Lakeland, where he spent most of last season. In 41 games with the Flying Tigers, he is hitting .270 with eight doubles, two home runs and nine runs driven in before being called up to Double-A Erie on May 23.
Wade Hinkle, Lakeland Flying Tigers (Class A Advanced, Detroit Tigers)
In his second season with the Detroit Tigers organization, Hinkle has spent both seasons with Lakeland. Hinkle has reached base safely in his last nine games, including a string of seven straight games drawing a walk. This season, he is hitting .241 with an OBP of .372 and three home runs and leads the Flying Tigers with 14 doubles and is second with 28 runs batted in.
Nate Griep, Carolina Mudcats (Class A Advanced, Milwaukee Brewers)
Griep converted two more saves in back-to-back games on June 30-July 1 for Carolina, upping his league-leading save total to 17. Griep has 17 saves in 19 opportunities this season with an ERA of 1.86 (6 ER, 29.0 IP). Opponents are hitting just .184 off him while he has 28 strikeouts to 16 walks and a 3-0 record (26 appearances).
Lucas Benenati, Dayton Dragons (Class A, Cincinnati Reds)
Benenati pitched both Monday and Tuesday for Dayton, throwing a perfect inning of relief Monday and recording a strikeout Tuesday. In the pair of appearances, he totaled 1 1/3 innings and allowed just one hit and no runs. He has 12 appearances this season with Dayton, with 19 strikeouts and four walks in 16 2/3 innings and a 7.56 ERA.
Tyler Wolfe, Quad Cities River Bandits (Class A, Houston Astros)
Wolfe has a hit in four of his last five games with Quad Cities, going 1-for-4 with a run scored in his last game on Monday. Wolfe began the season with Double-A Corpus Christi, where he had a homer, two RBI and two runs scored in 10 games before being assigned to Class A Quad Cities on June 16. In 11 games for the River Bandits, Wolfe is 5-for-38 (.132) with an RBI, double and six walks.
Levi MaVorhis, State College Spikes (Class A Short Season, St. Louis Cardinals)
MaVorhis started Thursday against Auburn, going three innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk with a strikeout. MaVhoris is 0-0 in two games (two starts) with an ERA of 7.11 (5 ER, 6.1 IP) and six strikeouts. He is in his second season of pro ball after spending 2016 in Johnson City (rookie), where he posted a 3.09 ERA in 35 innings (12 ER) and 22 strikeouts.
Parker Rigler, Great Falls Voyagers (Rookie, Chicago White Sox)
Rigler appeared in two games last week after making his professional debut on June 21, suffering his first loss on June 28 after allowing two earned runs in two innings against Helena. On Saturday, he struck out two in two innings of relief but allowed three earned runs. Rigler has 12 strikeouts in seven innings (four appearances) with three walks while allowing eight hits and five earned runs. He was the second Wildcat pitcher taken in the 2017 MLB Draft, picked by the Chicago White Sox in the 31st round (927th overall).
Jordan Floyd, Burlington Royals (Rookie, Kansas City Royals)
After making his professional debut with two outings for the Arizona Royals, Floyd was assigned to Rookie Burlington. In one game for Burlington, Floyd threw 2 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run and struck out one. Floyd collected a save in his professional debut with the Arizona Royals, going two innings while striking out five and allowing only one hit and one walk. Floyd was the first Wildcat taken in the 2017 MLB Draft after being selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 10th round (300th overall).
Jake Scudder, Auburn Doubledays (Class A Short Season, Washington Nationals)
Scudder made his professional debut on June 28 for Class A Auburn, going 1-for-4 with an RBI against State College. In four games played, he is hitting .286 (4-for-14) with two doubles and two runs driven in. Scudder, K-State’s two-time home run and RBI leader, was taken by the Nationals in the 16th round (493rd overall) of the 2017 MLB Draft.
Josh Rolette, Cleveland Indians (39th round)
Rolette was taken by the Cleveland Indians in the 39th round of the 2017 MLB Draft and has yet to be assigned to a roster.
