K-State Does it Again!

Aug 21, 2017 | General

Winning a thrilling, 70-69, game over No. 12/13 Iowa State (20-8, 10-6 Big 12), the Wildcats came from behind to win their final home game of the 2014-15 season and post their fifth top-25 win of the year.

"The emotions were high; the team put a lot of pressure on itself to win this game and go out with a good ending for Bramlage, the fans and the seniors," said sophomore Wesley Iwundu, who threw down the game-winning dunk with less than 30 seconds left after stealing an Iowa State pass. "This is the best week all season. We had a lot of rest after the KU game, then another big win today with Iowa State. It's been great."

The Wildcats were led by sophomore Nigel Johnson's 17 points to go along with a career-high nine rebounds, while junior Justin Edwards and Iwundu joined Johnson in double figures with 16 and 11 points, respectively.

The final time playing in their home arena, Wildcat seniors Thomas Gipson and Nino Williams also played a key impact on the game as Gipson scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Williams scored six points and had four rebounds.

"I am just happy and proud of our guys, especially the seniors," said head coach Bruce Weber. "This season has not gone as we had hoped or expected. We have had a lot of games like this where it came down to the wire, but throughout the whole season they have continued to battle and fight."

K-State's five wins against top-25 teams rank third nationally while its 11 wins over the past two seasons also ranks third in the nation.

"It was a great win for us and a great week for the seniors to end the season," explained Weber. "We are the best 15-15 team in the country."

The Wildcats will now have a week off before concluding their regular season next Saturday as the team is set to travel to Austin, Texas, to face Texas (17-11, 6-9 Big 12) at 3 p.m., on ESPN2.

Jones Earns Big 12 High Point Award, Winters and Williamson Win Titles

AMES, Iowa - Akela Jones earned high-point scorer of the meet, highlighting a strong second day effort by the K-State Track and Field women that saw them finish a close second to Texas at the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championship. Scoring 132.50 points total, the women's effort was the best in program history in regards to both points and finish in the Big 12 era.

Head coach Cliff Rovelto had nothing but praise for the women's showing - a showing that had 17 of the 22 women that competed at least contribute a point to the team's final tally.

"Last night, I sat down and looked at [the standings]," Rovelto said. "And I was thinking we could maybe get to 133 points and we scored 132.50 so we really couldn't have done much more than we did."

Equestrian Upends No. 1 Lady Bears on Senior Day
The K-State equestrian team ran its home winning streak to 18 straight on Saturday as the Wildcats knocked off No. 1 Baylor on Senior Day, 10-9, at Timbercreek Stables.

K-State came out on top in Equitation over Fences (3-2), Equitation on the Flat (3-2) and Reining (4-1), while the Lady Bears upended K-State, 3-1, in Horsemanship.

"It was really good coming off a win last weekend," said head coach Casie Maxwell. "Our confidence was boosted from that win and being back at home. We had a great crowd out here today. It was really high energy and kept the girls motivated. The cheering started off with screaming and continued at that pace all day long. That is how the girls rode. They rode up to that potential. They really wanted to finish the season - earn an 18th home win, stay undefeated at home and send their seniors out on a high note. They did a great job today."
