Crews’ Three-Run Homer Highlights First Fall Exhibition

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State freshman Mason Crews' three-run home run and senior Rainer Ausmus' two-run double highlighted the team's first fall exhibition, as the Wildcats and Cowley College played to a 6-6 tie in a predetermined 13-inning game Thursday at Tointon Family Stadium.
"I was happy with today," first-year head coach Pete Hughes after the game. "We played error-free baseball for nine innings, that's a big improvement from where we were on the first day of the fall. So, if we can keep doing that, we'll put ourselves in a position to have success.
"I thought we threw enough strikes, but I think we've got to throw more. We've got to clean up some things but overall, I thought our approach was very good. Got to see some young guys do some things and it's just fun getting to play against a different uniform. I wanted us to compete and play fast and play clean defense and we achieved all those things."
Ausmus delivered a two-out, two-run double in the second inning and Crews' homer capped a four-run eighth that gave the Cats a 6-5 lead. Junior Will Brennan, who also started the game on the mound for the Wildcats, recorded an RBI single and freshman outfielder Jeffrey Boggess doubled in the bottom of the eighth.
Freshman Dylan Phillips and junior Caleb Littlejim each doubled in the game. Brennan had K-State's only multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored while also picking up two strikeouts over an inning pitched.
Relievers Jaxon Passino, Eric Torres and Gavin Hinchliffe each tossed a perfect inning of relief. K-State, who utilized 10 pitchers, yielded just two hits after the seventh inning and totaled 11 strikeouts on the day.
Cowley plated single runs in the fourth and sixth innings before a three-run seventh handed the Tigers a 5-2 lead. Following Crews' shot in the eighth, the Cats held a one-run lead until the top of the 13th inning, when Cowley scraped across a game-tying run.
The Cats will host their second fall exhibition on Friday, October 19 against Hutchinson Community College at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all fans.
Season tickets are now on sale for the 2019 season and are available through the K-State Ticket Office by calling 1.800.221.CATS, visiting the ticket office inside Bramlage Coliseum or by going to k-statesports.com/tickets.
