MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's tennis program revealed the signing of Ioana Gheorghita to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) for the 2018-19 season, as announced by head coach Danielle Steinberg.
Gheorghita, a native of Ploiesti, Romania, comes to K-State having reached a world professional Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of No. 1207.
"We are very excited to have Ioana join our program," said Steinberg. "With her vast playing experience and her maturity level, we believe she will have a great impact on the team right away. We met Ioana and her family in her hometown, as well as here in Manhattan, and we were very impressed with her work ethic and attitude. She is hungry to work and improve and is excited to be part of this program's bright future. With Ioana on board, the future is looking even better for K-State tennis."
In addition to reaching the main draw in multiple International Tennis Federation (ITF) professional events, she also earned a spot in the quarterfinal round of the Romanian National Championship in 2015. She also reached two international finals in U16 doubles and the quarterfinal round four times in ITF doubles events.
The 42nd-ranked Wildcats (14-9, 4-5 Big 12) concluded the regular season in a tie for fifth place in the Big 12 standings and will face Texas Tech in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship Friday.
