WACO, Texas – Senior Janee' Kassanavoid secured her second-consecutive Big 12 Outdoor women's hammer throw title on Friday, throwing a school record 68.21m/223-09.50 to win the event on day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Waco, Texas.
Kassanavoid's record-breaking throw earned the senior her second-consecutive Big 12 title, as the Wildcat women have now won the event in five of the last six Big 12 Outdoor Championships.
"I was just looking to P.R., coach and I were working on technical things after I got my first throw in I knew I wasn't safe but I knew I would do what I had to do," Kassanavoid said of her second-straight Big 12 Championship. "It just kind of sets the tone, I am happy to be out here and I look forward to supporting my teammates the rest of the weekend."
The native of Lawson, Missouri grabbed an early lead in the event on her first throw, recording a throw of 66.72m/218-10 to jump out to an advantage. Kassanavoid's lead stood throughout the competition, before she improved upon her mark on her last throw to record a new school and facility record of 68.21m/223-09.50.
"In training this week she [Kassanavoid] showed that she is getting into pretty good shape," Assistant coach Greg Watson said. "Her and I both feel that there are bigger throws still out there, she looked good, but we both know we have to keep training and line it up in the next four weeks."
In total, the Wildcats scored 22 points in the women's hammer throw, as sophomore Helene Ingvaldsen put together a strong throw of 63.40m/208-00.25 to finish second, while redshirt-freshman Shaelyn Ward and freshman Taylor Latimer finished fifth and seventh to earn podium finishes. Sophomore Ashley Petr also put together a solid performance, finishing 10th with a throw of 50.93m/167-01.25.
Along with Kassanavoid's record-breaking day, the Wildcats began the combined events on Friday, where sophomore Aaron Booth had a solid day by finishing in the top-five of each of his five events, including a first-place finish in the men's long jump.
Through day one of the decathlon, Booth stands in second place with 3,853 points, while freshman Antuane Dennard is in fifth with 3,597 points, junior Max Estill is in seventh with 3,513 points and junior Simone Fassina is in eighth place with 3,469 points. The Wildcats will round out day two of the decathlon on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the men's 110-meter hurdles, before concluding their competition with the men's 1,500 meters at 4:30 p.m.
In the women's heptathlon sophomore Ariel Okorie put herself in great position to contend for the championship, tallying 3,417 points, including a first-place finish in the women's 100-meter hurdles to get the day started.
The heptathletes began their day with the women's 100-meter hurdles, where Okorie got off to a solid start by running a wind-aided 13.36 to garner 1,071 points. Fellow sophomore Lauren Taubert finished third in the event in 13.76.
The Wildcats continued their momentum into the women's heptathlon high jump, where Okorie recorded a personal best jump of 1.70m/5-07 to place second in the event, while Taubert and junior Morgan Coffman jumped 1.67m/5-05.75 to place third.
Okorie, Taubert and Coffman rounded out day one of the women's heptathlon in the 200 meters, where Taubert led the Wildcats behind a time of 24.51 to earn 932 points, followed Okorie and Coffman placed sixth and ninth, respectively.
Through four of seven events in the women's heptathlon, Okorie stands just 132 points off of the leader, Texas Tech's Kaylee Hinton. Taubert concluded day one in third with 3,375 points, while Coffman finished the day in eighth with 2,493 points. The women's heptathlon will pick up at 11:00 a.m. on Friday with the start of the women's long jump.
Later in the day, sophomores Derek Selk and Logan Wolfley and freshman Dawson Miller took on the men's javelin throw, where the three underclassmen all found podium finishes. Selk led the Wildcats with a monstrous personal best throw of 67.15m/220-03.75 to place third, followed by Wolfley who recorded a personal best of 64.83m/212-08.50 to place fourth and Miller who placed eighth with a throw of 57.60m/188-11.75.
"The javelin guys did great, they competed and I know they are proud of what they accomplished and I am very proud of what they accomplished too," Watson said.
In the women's javelin, freshman Taylor Latimer competed in the event for the first time this season, where she qualified for the finals after three throws. Latimer improved upon her qualifying mark on her final attempt, where she threw 42.12m/138-02, which placed her ninth overall.
In the final event of the day, senior's Jeff Bachman and Bryan Zack competed in the men's 10,000 meters for the Wildcats, in a race that involved great effort from both seniors. Bachman battled his way on the final laps to place 10th overall in 31:29.99, while Zack finished 15th in 32:08.71.
Through day one of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship, the Wildcat women are in first-place with 22 points, while the K-State men are in second place with 20 points. Day two of the Big 12 Outdoor Championship begins at 10:00 a.m. with the continuation of the men's decathlon.
