Irvin Fuels Sooners’ Series-Opening Shutout of K-State
May 04, 2018 | Baseball
NORMAN, Okla. – Led by starter Jake Irvin, three Oklahoma pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout of K-State, as the Sooners claimed the opening game of the series Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park, 12-0.
Irvin yielded just a pair of hits, both to K-State freshman Jordan Maxson, over his six innings of work. Irvin collected 10 strikeouts, improving his record to 6-1, while the Oklahoma (29-18, 11-8 Big 12) offense gave him 11 runs of support after he finished six scoreless frames.
A product of Wichita, Kansas, Maxson singled twice off Irvin for his second straight game with multiple hits. Maxson has turned in a multi-hit game in three of his last four Big 12 games for K-State (18-27, 3-16 Big 12).
OU's Kyler Murray drove in a game-high four runs, including a two-run homer in the sixth, while Steele Walker went 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs batted in. Four Oklahoma hitters turned in multi-hit games.
Five of Oklahoma's 12 runs scored in the game were unearned due to three Wildcat errors.
Senior Hudson Treu, in his first Friday night start, suffered the loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits over 3 2/3 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Oklahoma got a run across in the bottom of the first off Treu, as Walker doubled after Brandon Zaragoza singled to have a pair of Sooners in scoring position with one out. Treu limited the damage as the only OU run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Murray.
The Sooners tacked on three more in the second, pushing their lead to four runs after two innings. Two of OU's three runs were unearned after an error. Cade Cavalli lifted a sacrifice fly and Zaragoza brought home his second run with an RBI groundout.
A three-run fourth, all with two outs, extended Oklahoma's lead to 7-0. Treu issued three consecutive walks, the third of which brought in a run and ended his day. A batter later and with Brogan Heinen on the mound, another error allowed two more runs to score.
Murray blasted a two-run home run as part of a four-run sixth inning for the Sooners. All four runs scored were unearned after a K-State error extended the frame, as all nine OU hitters came to the plate in the inning.
Oklahoma relievers Ryan Madden and Zack Matthews limited the Cats to one hit over the final three innings to go with four strikeouts. The three Sooners pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts and three walks.
K-State relievers Quinton Potter and Luke Hauswirth tossed the game's final 2 1/3 innings for the Wildcats, allowing just one hit with five strikeouts.
The Cats and Sooners continue the three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. from L. Dale Mitchell Park. The game will be televised on FOX Sports Oklahoma+ and fans can also live on KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350AM) with free, live audio streamed on kstatesports.com.
