Another Second Half Rally Lifts K-State Past UAPB, 62-51

Nov 19, 2019 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior Xavier Sneed scored 12 of his team-high 21 points after halftime, as Kansas State once again used a second-half rally to earn a 62-51 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff to close out a homestand on Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.

Tied at 27-all at the half after allowing the Golden Lions to score 7 of the last 9 points of the first half, K-State (4-0) took the lead for good from UAPB (0-4) with an 11-2 run midway through the second half spurred by 5 consecutive points from Sneed for a 40-31 lead at the 11:13 mark. After the Lions clawed to 40-35 on back-to-back baskets, the Wildcats used a 19-7 run over the next 6 minutes to finally break free for a 59-42 advantage with 3:46 to play.

K-State has had to use second-half rallies in each of its first four games after averaging just 21 points on 32.1 percent (36-of-112) shooting, including 11.6 percent (5-of-43) from 3-point range, in the first half. The Wildcats have responded after halftime, averaging 41.5 points on 50 percent (55-of-110) shooting in the second half.

Sneed led K-State in scoring for the third consecutive game, as he posted his fifth career 20-point game with a team-high 21 points on 6-of-12 field goals, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, to go with a team-best 6 rebounds in 36 minutes of action. He was joined in double figures by fellow senior Makol Mawien, who registered 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting. Three others (Antonio Gordon, DaJuan Gordon and Cartier Diarra) added 9, 8 and 7 points each, while Diarra eclipsed his career-high in assists for the third consecutive game with a game-high 8.

Diarra has the most assists (27) by a Wildcat through the first four games of a season, eclipsing the mark of 24 by Tim Jankovich in 1981-82.

The Lions, which connected on 50 percent (12-of-24) from the field in the first half, hit on just 38.5 percent (10-of-26) in the second half. They became the fourth consecutive opponent to not reach 60 points against the stingy Wildcat defense, which is allowing just 53.8 points on 36.5 percent shooting this season.

K-State forced UAPB into 19 turnovers, converting those miscues into 20 points.

Senior Marquell Carter led all players with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-17 field goals, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range, for the Lions to go with a game-high 9 rebounds in 37 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Another slow start plagued the Wildcats in the early going, as the Golden Lions rattled off 6 straight points at the 17:33 mark after senior Makol Mawien opened the scoring with a jumper on the first possession.

Senior Xavier Sneed ended the team's long first-half drought from the 3-point line, connecting on a trey at the 15:57 mark to end a streak of 31 consecutive first-half misses from long range. The 3-pointer ignited a 12-0 run that included another Sneed trey and gave the Wildcats a 14-6 advantage with 11:39 before halftime.

UAPB took advantage of K-State's poor free throw shooting (2-of-8) during a 12-0 run of its own over the next 4 minutes to take an 18-14 lead with 7:41 remaining.

A jumper by junior Cartier Diarra ended a long drought by the Wildcats with just under 6 to play and started an 11-2 spurt that gave the team a 25-20 advantage with 2:49 to play in the first half.

The feisty Lions responded yet again by scoring 7 of the last 9 points of the half to enter the locker room with a 27-all tie with Wildcats. UAPB connected on 50 percent (12-of-24) from the field, including 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from 3-point range, in the first half, while K-State shot 40 percent (10-of-25), including 36.4 percent (4-of-11) from long range. The Wildcats missed their opportunities from the free throw line, making just 3-of-10 foul shots.

Sneed led K-State with 9 points on 3-of-7 field goals, while freshman DaJuan Gordon added 6 points on 2-of-4 shooting off the bench. Senior Marquell Carter led all scorers with 14 points for UAPB in the first half.

The Wildcats opened the second half by scoring 7 of the first 9 points, including a 5-0 spurt by Sneed, to take a 36-29 lead with 13:50 to play after a pair of free throws by junior Levi Stockard III.

The Lions closed to within 40-35 on a lay-up by Carter at the 10:10 mark, but Diarra 3-pointer on the next possession started a 9-2 run over the next two minutes that gave the Wildcats a 49-37 lead with 7:55 to play.

After a basket by UAPB on the next possession, K-State responded with 10 of the next 13 points to extend its lead to 59-42 with 3:46 remaining. The Lions closed out the game with a 9-3 run in the 62-51 final.

K-State connected on 37 percent (10-of-27) of its field goals after halftime, including 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from 3-point range, and made 11 of 15 free throws. UAPB finished at 38.5 percent (10-of-26) shooting, but the team did miss all 7 attempts from long range.

Sneed scored 12 of his team-high 21 points in the second half on 3-of-5 field goals, including 2-of-4 from 3-point range, and a perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line.

IN THEIR WORDS
K-State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On the game…
"Obviously, we have high expectations. You hope you're going to play well. Credit to them (UAPB). Two of their best players couldn't play, they got hurt in the last few days. They had been playing pretty fast and they decided we're going to hold the ball on you and pass and cut and move and make it difficult on you and they did. I think we had a mindset how it was going to go. I think our practices were pretty good the last two days and I think we thought it was just going to snap and go and it didn't and then all of the sudden we kind of lost our discipline on defense, lost our poise on offense. Again, I've got to be patient and just help them. They've got to come to practice and get better. That's where you get better, that's where you learn so when you get out there and they do something different and we call something out you're able to adjust and play."
