Wicks, Littlejim Lead Cats to 6-4 Win over Utah

Feb 23, 2019 | Baseball

SAN DIEGO – K-State starting pitcher Jordan Wicks went seven innings in a quality start and Caleb Littlejim added a two-run home run in the Wildcats' 6-4 win over Utah Saturday at Fowler Park on the second day of the Tony Gwynn Legacy.

Wicks, a freshman left-hander, yielded just two earned runs on six hits in a season-long outing by a Wildcat pitcher. Wicks struck out six in earning the win.

Senior reliever Mitch Zubradt came on to record a five-out save, his second of the season. Zubradt has recorded the final out in all three of K-State's (3-4) victories.

"Great character win after yesterday," said head coach Pete Hughes after the game. "Jordan Wicks set the tone for the entire game. He pitched like a seasoned vet. Really good overall win with a lot of contributors. Hopefully, we can carry this into tomorrow and finish off the trip successfully,"

Littlejim lifted a two-run home run as part of a four-run third. Freshman Dylan Phillips had two hits and drove in two as the Cats chased Utah starter Riley Pierce after three innings. Pierce took the loss for the Utes (1-4) after giving up five runs (3 earned) on five hits.

K-State took advantage of a couple Utah miscues in the first inning, as Thomas Hughes reached base via an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Pierce. Cameron Thompson came through with a two-out single to give the Cats a 1-0 lead.

Littlejim followed Chris Ceballos' leadoff double in the third with a two-run blast to left-center field to push K-State's lead to three runs. Will Brennan later scored on a passed ball and Philips' infield single made the score 5-0 after the top of the third.

In the bottom half of the frame, Utah had runners on the corners with nobody out, but Wicks wiggled out of the jam with only one run allowed, a sacrifice fly by Erik Migueles that scored Oliver Dunn.

Phillips tallied his second infield RBI single in the top of the fifth to hand K-State a four-run lead at 6-2. The freshman's second hit came on the heels of Utah's second run, a run-scoring single by Dominic Foscalina.

The Utes threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning and cut the Wildcats' lead in half with two runs, highlighted by an RBI double by Rykker Tom. Zubradt entered the game with two runners on and one out and held Utah hitless over his 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Four Wildcats had two-hit games in Hughes, Brennan, Thompson and Phillips. Littlejim and Phillips each drove in a team-high two. Brennan and Ceballos each doubled.
Foscalina, Utah's leadoff man, went 3-for-5 with an RBI to pace the Utes. Tom was 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

K-State concludes the Tony Gwynn Legacy Sunday as it faces host San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium for a 4 p.m. CT first pitch. Coverage is available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) with online audio streaming at K-StateSports.com/watch.
