Wildcats Stifled by WVU’s Manoah
May 10, 2019 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – West Virginia starting pitcher Alek Manoah struck out 13 and scattered three hits over eight innings as the 20th-ranked Mountaineers shut out K-State 6-0 in the series opener Friday night at Tointon Family Stadium.
K-State's (24-27, 7-12) hit total equaled a season low while its 15 strikeouts marked a season high. WVU (30-17, 12-10 Big 12) scored all six of its runs over the first four innings, including five in the game's first two frames.
Manoah, a three-time Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, took a one-hitter into the sixth inning. Jaxon Passino and Will Brennan each singled in the sixth, the only inning the Wildcats had multiple baserunners. Manoah improved his record to 7-3.
After West Virginia opened a five-run lead after two innings, K-State starter Caleb Littlejim allowed just two hits over his final 4 2/3 innings with a stretch that saw him retire 10 straight Mountaineer hitters. The junior's 6 2/3 innings was a career long outing, as he allowed four earned runs (six runs) on six hits with two strikeouts in the loss.
Tyler Doanes began the night with a leadoff home run off Littlejim. Later in the first, an RBI groundout by Marques Inman put the score at 2-0 before K-State came to the plate.
TJ Lake delivered an RBI single to highlight the Mountaineer second, which had two of three runs unearned. Brandon White laced a double that scored Tevin Tucker in the fourth to push WVU's lead to six runs through four.
K-State reliever Luke Hauswirth limited the Mountaineers to one hit over the final two innings while striking out three.
In addition to singles from Brennan and Passino, Chris Ceballos' one-out single in the second accounted for all three Wildcat base hits. All nine K-State hitters struck out at least one time, with five going down on strikes multiple times.
The Cats finished 0-for-1 with runners in scoring position while WVU went 2-for-9. K-State was held hitless with two outs (0-for-8).
Senior Day is set for Saturday at 4 p.m., with a pregame ceremony honoring the Wildcats' four seniors. Game 2 of the series will air on ESPN3 and the ESPN app. Radio coverage will be available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM) and live streaming audio at K-StateSports.com/watch.
