TCU Edges K-State with Late Tip-In, 59-57

Jan 07, 2020 | Men's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore center Kevin Samuel's tip-in with 2 seconds lifted TCU to a 59-57 win over Kansas State on Tuesday night in the Big 12 home opener before 7,119 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.

The game-winning tip-in came 11 seconds after junior reserve David Sloan's 3-pointer tied the game at 57-all that helped the Wildcats (7-7, 0-2 Big 12) erase an 11-point second-half deficit.

In the final sequence, Samuel was able to rebound teammate R.J. Nembhard's missed jump shot for the tip-in and game-winning basket, as TCU (11-3, 2-0 Big 12) snapped a 4-game losing streak in the series.

Six of K-State's 7 losses have now come by single digits, including 5 losses by 6 points or less.

The loss spoiled a nearly impressive comeback and defensive effort by K-State, which trailed by 10 points at halftime after allowing 4 3-point field goals in the last 3:26 of the half and by 11 points just 2 minutes into the second half. The Wildcats held the Horned Frogs to just 24 points on 22.2 percent (6-of-27) shooting in the second half after allowing 35 in the opening half on 43.8 percent (14-of-32) shooting, including 7 3-pointers.

Senior Xavier Sneed led all scorers for the second consecutive game with 19 points on 5-of-14 field goals and 8-of-10 free throws, while fellow senior Makol Mawien added 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Sloan led the bench with 8 points in 21 minutes, as he had to spell starting point guard Cartier Diarra, who was hampered by foul trouble.

Samuel was one of four Horned Frogs in double figures, as he posted a double-double with 10 points on 5-of-9 field goals and a game-high 15 rebounds. Senior Desmond Bane led the team with 16 points on 6-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, while Nembhard and senior Jaire Grayer added 15 and 10 points, respectively.

Ten of TCU's 20 field goals came from 3-point range, as the Horned Frogs connected on 37 percent (10-of-27) from long range, but just 31.3 percent (10-of-32) from inside the arc. K-State's offense was the complete opposite, as the Wildcats connected on 58.6 percent (17-of-29) of their 2-point field goals, but just 20 percent (4-of-20) of their 3-pointers. K-State also squandered its opportunities at the free throw line in the second half, going 3-of-10.

HOW IT HAPPENED
TCU started the game off hot, scoring 7 points on 3-of-5 field goals, including a 3-point field goal by R.J. Nembhard to open the game, before senior Xavier Sneed recorded K-State's first points on 3 free throws at the 17:05 mark. The Horned Frogs took advantage of 3 Wildcat turnovers and a missed shot to grab the quick 7-0 lead.

The Wildcats chipped away the deficit, closing to 9-8 on a jumper by junior Levi Stockard III and a 3-point play by Sneed. However, Nembhard answered with his second corner 3-pointer to push the Frogs back ahead.

Junior David Sloan gave K-State its first lead at 13-12 on a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the 11:39 mark. TCU re-took the lead on the next possession on a jumper by Nembhard, as the teams traded the lead 5 times over the next few minutes before back-to-back layups by Kevin Samuel gave the Frogs a 23-19 edge at the 5:16 mark.

After K-State rallied to tie it at 23-all, 3 consecutive 3-pointers by Nembhard, senior Desmond Bane and senior Edric Dennis, Jr., gave TCU a 32-23 lead with 41 seconds to play before half. A layup by senior Makol Mawien ended the quick 9-0 run, but the Frogs answered from long range yet again as the half ended, as senior Jaire Grayer extended the lead to its largest of the half at 35-25.

TCU connected on 43.8 percent (14-of-32) from the field in the opening half, including 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range, while K-State hit on 34.8 percent (8-of-23), but just 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from long range. Sneed led all scorers with 10 points, while 3 Horned Frogs (Bane, Nembhard and Samuel) each had 8 points.

The teams went back and forth in the early going of the second half before a 3-pointer from Grayer at the shot clock buzzer gave TCU a 40-29 advantage just 2 minutes into the half. However, an intentional foul on Bane and subsequent free throw by junior Cartier Diarra ignited a 6-0 run by K-State that closed the gap to 40-37 and force head coach Jamie Dixon to call a timeout at the 14:05 mark.

Neither team could gain momentum for next few possessions before a spectacular 3-point by Sneed again closed the gap to one at 41-40 with 11:14 to play but Bane answered on the other end to push it back out to 44-40. A Stockard layup made it a one possession game, but a Grayer jumper and two free throws by Nembhard pushed the Frog lead back out to 48-42 at the media timeout at the 7:19 mark.

With TCU ahead 49-42 with just over 7 minutes to play, K-State scored 5 quick points on a dunk by freshman DaJuan Gordon and a 3-pointer by Sneed to again close within a possession with 4:27 remaining.

The teams traded points over the next few minutes before a Sneed free throw and a DaJuan Gordon jumper got the Wildcats to within 53-52 with 2:17 to play. Bane then gave the Horned Frogs a huge lift just 13 seconds later with a 3-pointer to increase the lead to 4. Neither team was able to make any movement before Diarra's dunk closed the Wildcats to 56-54 with 45 seconds left.

After Nembhard went 1-of-2 from the line, Sloan was able to can a 3-pointer after a mad scramble to tie the game at 57-all with 13 seconds left before the final sequence with the tip-in by Samuel with 2 seconds.

K-State connected on 50 percent (13-of-26) from the field in the second half, including 25 percent (3-of-12) from 3-point range, while TCU was held to just 22.2 percent (6-of-27) shooting, including 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from long range. Sneed led all scorers with 9 points after halftime, while Bane added 8 points for the Horned Frogs.

IN THEIR WORDS

K-State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On the game…
"We kept hanging in there, hanging in there, had some opportunities. We missed five free throws in a row in the second half, three of 10 in the second half, five in a row. Every time it looked like we might be out of it, we still found a way to get back in. We made a crazy scramble play, David (Sloan) hit the three. I didn't know if we had a timeout left. I thought we did. I looked at the coaches, because I wanted to get our defense set. I know some people might think that's crazy. I would rather have that with a younger team so we can make sure. They guarded them hard all night. He drove, put up a tough shot. Obviously, Mak (Makol Mawien) stayed in the ball screen, which he is supposed to, to make it tough. But he has got to rotate over and we did not just box out. He got a nice tip that made a difference in the game. For the second half, we played pretty good defense. We had the bad stretch at the end of the half, and that allowed them to get that lead, which made it for us to tough to catch up."
