MANHATTAN, Kansas – Members of the K-State men's and women's basketball coaching staffs are representing the school as part of the formation of the Big 12 Black Assistant Coaches Alliance (BACA).

The BACA is made up of male and female assistant coaches in the Big 12 Conference that are passionately dedicated to taking action in or maintaining a supportive and inclusive environment for all student-athletes and coaches.

The Big 12 BACA has been formed as a response to the ongoing social unrest that has historically influenced our society in an adverse way. The intent of the alliance is to work in concert with each member institution's student-athlete development unit. The alliance will focus its efforts to assist in educating, unifying, serving and supporting all Big 12 student-athletes and coaches.

The core values of the alliance are:
  • To educate through organizing fact-based literature, speakers and event that would encourage awareness and knowledge
  • To unify by including all student-athletes and coaches with the Big 12 Conference to participate in organized events
  • To serve by being physically present and active in providing information and participating in all events and activities
  • To support intercollegiate collaborative initiatives that holistically advance our mission

K-State men's basketball associate head coach Chris Lowery, men's basketball assistant coaches Jermaine Henderson and Shane Southwell, women's basketball assistant coaches Chris Carr and Ebony Haliburton and women's basketball coordinator of recruiting operations Ebony Gilliam have taken active roles in BACA.

Lowery, who is in his 26th season in college basketball, was a two-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year (2005, 2007) at Southern Illinois before being head coach Bruce Weber's first hire in 2012 and helping the Wildcats to 161 wins and a pair of Big 12 titles in the last eight seasons.

Henderson is entering his fourth season at K-State, including his second as an assistant coach, and has more than 22 years of college coaching experience, including a stint as interim head coach at his alma mater Miami (Ohio).

Southwell returned to his alma mater this past offseason after one-year stint at Robert Morris. He has been part of more than 140 wins and two Big 12 titles during this time as a player and a graduate assistant at K-State.

Carr is in his fifth season at Kansas State and his fourth as an assistant coach. In his first season with the Wildcats in 2016-17, Carr advised the program as the director of student-athlete development. Following a highly decorated playing career at Southern Illinois from 1992-95, Carr played for six seasons in the NBA.

Haliburton is in her fourth season at K-State and her second as an assistant coach. Prior to her move to a coaching role, Haliburton aided the program as the director of student-athlete development from 2017-19.

Gilliam is entering her seventh season at K-State and her fourth season as the program's coordinator of recruiting operations. Gilliam was an assistant coach with the Wildcats from 2014-17. Prior to joining the Wildcats, Gilliam was an assistant coach on Jeff Mittie's staff at TCU from 2012-14.
