K-State Leads League, Entire Eligible Roster Named Academic All-Big 12
Apr 27, 2020 | Women's Golf
MANHATTAN, Kan. - All six eligible K-State women's golf team members were named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team - tied for most among league honorees - as the conference office announced the awards on Monday.
Briony Bayles, Darby Deans, Heather Fortushniak, Reid Isaac, Niamh McSherry and Chloe Weir were all honored as K-State landed at least three players on the conference's top academic team for the third time in the last four seasons. Deans and Isaac earned their second Academic All-Big 12 honors, while the other four Wildcats received their first.
The Wildcats, who are academically supported and advised by assistant director of student-athlete services Jamie Cherry and learning specialist Liane Fowler, tied Texas for the league lead with six team members honored.
"This team has shown dedication in the classroom all year," head coach Kristi Knight said. "I'm proud of the ladies for their excellent work while classes were in person and then not missing a beat with the transition to online. It's pretty special to have basically the entire team recognized by the Big 12."
The conference, which announced 45 men's and 41 women's honorees, does not recognize freshmen - like K-State's Haley Vargas - or transfers for league academic honors and the First Team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. Due to the interrupted playing season, this year's playing percentage requirements were waived. Additionally the K-State men's team had three honorees.
During the 2019-20 season, K-State won the team and individual (McSherry) titles at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills in the fall and was climbing the rankings when the season was cut short with two regular season events and the Big 12 Championship still to play due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
K-State will lose fifth-year senior Chloe Weir, but welcomes an experienced squad back for the 2020-21 campaign, along with signees Napua Glossner (San Diego, Calif.) and Gabriela McNelly (Mico, Texas).
