Kimball Avenue Closure Alters Football Traffic

Oct 27, 2021 | Football, Athletics

MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kimball Avenue between Denison Avenue and Manhattan Avenue east of Bill Snyder Stadium is closed for the remainder of the football season as the next phase of the North Campus Corridor project is underway. As a result, gameday traffic from Tuttle Creek Boulevard will be rerouted to Marlatt Avenue beginning with Saturday's 2:30 p.m. contest against TCU.

Fans traveling to the stadium from the east side of Manhattan on Tuttle Creek Boulevard (US 24) will need to detour to Marlatt, approximately one-half mile north of Kimball. From there, fans can access the stadium's parking lots and satellite parking areas utilizing Denison, College or Browning avenues.

Kimball Closed - Entrance Traffic

Postgame exiting traffic will also be altered, officials said. All traffic directed out of the parking lots east onto Kimball will be routed via two lanes north onto Denison to Marlatt. Traffic will not be permitted to turn south on Denison. Once traffic has reached Marlatt, vehicles will be directed via two lanes east to Tuttle Creek Boulevard. At that intersection, one lane will be routed to the north and two lanes will be used for traffic turning south.

Due to the high volume of traffic on Marlatt during the postgame exiting phase, Marlatt will be closed between College and Denison to all eastbound and westbound traffic. Additionally, westbound traffic will not be permitted on Marlatt from Tuttle Creek Boulevard during this time.

Meanwhile, the reconstruction of Kimball Avenue between Candlewood Drive and Seth Child Road (K-113) west of Bill Snyder Family Stadium has been completed and all lanes of Kimball and Seth Child will be fully open for Saturday's game.

Officials are emphasizing that traffic flow east of Bill Snyder Family Stadium may be slower than fans are accustomed to, especially those using the satellite parking lots. They are asking fans to allow for additional travel time to and from the game.

This new phase of the North Campus Corridor is a $4 million project involving a total reconstruction of the roadway, storm drainage system and sidewalks and includes the demolition of the old cattle bridge over Kimball. It will improve traffic safety with the widening of the width of the street to include a raised center median between oncoming traffic along the curves of the roadway.
