K-STATE TO MEET 14/15 ILLINOIS IN CONSOLATION GAME OF HALL OF FAME CLASSIC
- Kansas State (2-1) will meet a ranked opponent for the second consecutive day, as the Wildcats play No. 14/15 Illinois at 6 p.m., CT in the consolation game of the 21st annual Hall of Fame Classic presented by Hotels.com on Tuesday, November 23 at the T-Mobile Center.
- Both teams lost in the semifinals of the tournament on Monday night with the Fighting Illini dropping the first game to Cincinnati, 71-51, before the Wildcats' rally fell short to Arkansas in the nightcap, 72-64. The Bearcats (5-0) and Razorbacks (4-0) will meet for Championship at 8:30 p.m., CT following the consolation game.
- The storylines write themselves for Tuesday's game, as K-State head coach Bruce Weber will face his old team for just the second time, while Illinois head coach Brad Underwood will meet his alma mater for the third time with the previous 2 meetings coming while he was coach at Oklahoma State. Weber coached the Fighting Illini from 2003-12, guiding them to 210 wins, 6 NCAA Tournament and the 2005 NCAA Championship game. Underwood, a native of McPherson, Kansas, played for the Wildcats from 1984-86 before serving as a director of operations under Bob Huggins from 2006-07 then assistant/associate head coach from 2007-12 under Frank Martin.
- K-State is in the midst of its third appearance in the Hall of Fame Classic, but the first time falling to the consolation game. The Wildcats advanced to the championship game in their previous 2 appearance before falling to Top 10 foes Duke (2010) and North Carolina (2015).
OPENING TIP
- The Hall of Fame Classic field might be one of the best of any of the preseason tournaments, as the 4 schools all rank in the Top 20 for NCAA Tournament all-time appearances - combining for 128 - with each advancing to 31 or more such appearances in their respective histories. Arkansas and Cincinnati are tied with 5 others with the 13th-most appearances at 33, while K-State and Illinois are tied with Georgetown and Purdue for the 20th-most appearances at 31.
- K-State and Illinois will meet for the 11th time and the first time since 2000 in a series that dates nearly 100 years and includes a NCAA Tournament matchup in 1981. The teams last met on Dec. 2, 2000, when the Fighting Illini completed the sweep of a home-and-home series (1999 and 2000) with a 76-56 win over the Wildcats at Bramlage Coliseum.
- Ironically, a K-State graduate was the head coach at Illinois for the last 2 meetings in the series, as recently retired Lon Kruger led the Fighting Illini to the wins in 1999 and 2000.
- Overall, Illinois owns an 8-2 advantage over K-State in the all-time series, including 6 straight wins dating back to 1981. This will be the first meeting on a neutral court since the Wildcats knocked off the Fighting Illini, 57-52, in the NCAA Tournament on March 19, 1981 in Salt Lake City, which K-State's last win in the series.
- No. 14/15 Illinois enters Tuesday's game with a 2-2 record, starting the season with home wins over Jackson State (71-47) and Arkansas State (92-53) before loses on the road at Marquette (66-67) and to Cincinnati (51-71). The Fighting Illini are a balanced team with 5 players averaging in double figures led by preseason All-American Kofi Cockburn, who scored a team-high 18 points in his first game of the season against Cincinnati on Monday night. He missed the first 3 games due to an NCAA suspension.
- In addition to the head coaches, there are a number of connections between the schools. Illinois assistant Chester Frazier played for Weber at Illinois and served as his assistant at K-State from 2012-19, while K-State assistant Shane Southwell and graduate assistant Curtis Kelly played while Underwood was an assistant at K-State. Fifth-year senior Mark Smith played his freshman season at Illinois for Underwood before transferring to Missouri then K-State.
