THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Kansas State women's golf team posted a 1-under par 287 performance during the first round of the 2021 Big 12 Championship on Sunday at the par-72, 6,314-yard Club at Carlton Woods. The performance landed the Wildcats in a tie for fourth with 32nd-ranked Oklahoma.
Seniors Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry led the way for K-State. Isaac carded a 2-under par 70 over the first 18 holes to sit in a tie for fifth, while McSherry was one stroke back and in a tie for 11th.
"I am just really proud of the ladies," head coach Kristi Knight said after a strong first round. "We have been to the COVID testing twice, but no problems there. A few of the girls have been under the weather, which kept us on edge, but they still did a really great job today. They played good, confident and intentional golf. We responded well in the face of adversity, so I am really proud of them. That's what I'm excited to see."
Haley Vargas and Heather Fortushniak carded 73s to finish the first 18 holes in a tie for 24th, while freshman Napua Glossner rounded out the team's scoring with a 5-over par 77.
"I think they've done a good job of focusing on what they can control," Knight said. "They hit a lot of good golf shots today. While they did hit a couple bad ones, they survived them and responded well to them. The key will be to keep the rhythm and play the game they love."
Oklahoma State, ranked sixth in the nation, led the field on Sunday by shooting a 9-under par 279 in the first round, four strokes ahead of second place and 15th-ranked Baylor. No. 18 Texas is in third place at 3-under par 285, just two strokes ahead of K-State.
On the individual scoreboard, Baylor's Gurleen Kaur, ranked 87th nationally by Golfstat, is in first place with a 6-under par 66, three strokes ahead of a three-way tie for second place.
K-State tees off for the second round on Monday morning at 9 a.m. Fans can follow live scoring of the 2021 Big 12 Championship at www.golfstat.com throughout the event.
