K-State Travels to Albuquerque for Last Regular Season Tournament

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Kansas State women's golf team will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico to play in the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational, held Sunday and Monday at the par-72, 6,317-yard Championship Golf Course at The University of New Mexico.
The Wildcats were originally scheduled to play this week at the Houston Oaks Invitational at the Houston Oaks Golf Club, but a few of the greens at the course did not endure the February winter storms well, forcing course ownership shut it down until late Spring.
"All of a sudden the golf course changed and the field dramatically changed," head coach Kristi Knight said. "Then, we got concerned if the tournament would even happen. After speaking with Coach Jared [Helin] about it and the host coaches reaching out, we did what was in our best interest and found another event to attend."
Despite the late schedule change, the Wildcats are excited to get back out on the course and redeem themselves after a tough finish at The Bruzzy. The UNM Course is set to be one of the locations for the NCAA Regionals next Spring and will be a new course for the current Wildcats. Knight and K-State last played in the event in 2014.
"It is a great golf course," Knight said. "With a higher elevation, the ball will travel farther than it will here. There are large greens and elevation changes in the fairways, but we are accustomed to that here at Colbert Hills. It is kind of a combination with both wide and demanding fairways, so I'm excited for the ladies to see it. It will be a good challenge."
The lineup heading to Albuquerque, led by seniors Reid Isaac and Niamh McSherry, will mirror the one at The Bruzzy. Isaac tied for 15th the last time out, and McSherry tied for 37th. Rounding out the Wildcat lineup will be Haley Vargas, Napua Glossner and Heather Fortushniak.
"The key for us will be how we respond to a golf shot that doesn't go as planned," Knight said. "It is important for us to stay patient and in the moment and not overthink our shots. We have played a lot of good tournament golf, but we have to stay in our process."
The Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational includes Golfstat's 22nd-ranked team in Arizona. Other teams joining the field are Colorado State, Denver, Grand Canyon, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Pepperdine, UNLV, Washington and Wyoming.
Kansas State will tee off hole No. 10 beginning at 8:02 a.m. (MST) on Sunday. Fans can follow live scoring at www.golfstat.com throughout the event.
