K-State Baseball Summer Update - July 20

PRO CATS
Evan Marshall, Chicago White Sox
Marshall has appeared 27 times for the Chicago White Sox in 2021, totaling 27 1/3 innings and 26 strikeouts with an ERA of 5.60. He last appeared on June 29 against the Minnesota Twins, going two-thirds of an inning with two earned runs on two hits. It marked the first earned runs Marshall has allowed over his last six outings (5 2/3 innings) dating back to June 8. He was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 30 with a right flexor pronator strain. Marshall is in his third season with the White Sox and finished the abbreviated 2020 season with a 2-1 record and a 2.38 ERA, helping Chicago to its first playoff appearance since 2008. Marshall made his MLB debut in 2014 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and has spent time with the Seattle Mariners and Cleveland Indians and was a fourth-round pick of the Diamondbacks in 2011.

Nick Martini, Iowa Cubs (Triple-A, Chicago Cubs)
Martini has split time between the Iowa Cubs and the Cubs' Major League roster this season. He is hitting .250 with four doubles, a triple, four home runs and 15 RBI in 38 games with the Iowa Cubs this season. He has eight hits over his last four games, including a 3-for-4 effort on July 15 vs. Toledo. In July, Martini has a slash line of .267/.400/.289. Martini has been called up twice to Chicago, making his debut with the club on May 7. In 12 games, he is 1-for-12 with an RBI and two walks this season. Last season, Martini was sent to the Phillies' Alternate Training Site in Allentown, Pa., to be part of the team's player pool for the taxi squad. Martini spent time with both the Oakland A's and San Diego Padres in 2019, hitting .226 with a home run, four doubles and 14 runs batted in. The former All-American outfielder was a seventh-round selection of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011.
 
Drew Mount, Chattanooga Lookouts (Double-A, Cincinnati Reds)
Mount was assigned to the Chattanooga Lookouts (Double-A) after playing five games with the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Reds following a stint on the seven-day injured. In seven games with the Lookouts, Mount has gone 8-for-22 (.364) with two home runs and two RBI. In the month of July, Mount has hit safely in seven of nine games with three multi-hit games, including going 3-for-5 with a home run on July 13. In five games with the ACL Reds, he went 4-for-9 (.444) with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. Mount enters his third season in the Reds' organization and was assigned to Class-A (advanced) Daytona after spending the 2018 season with the Billings Mustangs (rookie). In his minor league career, he has a slash line of .285/.340/.421 with 11 home runs and 96 RBI. Mount was the only Wildcat taken in the 2018 MLB Draft when he was selected in the 16th-round by Cincinnati.
 
Will Brennan, Lake County Captains (High-A, Cleveland Indians)
Brennan was assigned to Lake County ahead of the 2021 season and has a slash line of .290/.372/.447 with 20 doubles, four homers and 29 runs batted in. Brennan leads the Captains in on-base percentage, doubles and ranks second in steals (12). Brennan has hit two leadoff homers over his last 10 games and has hit safely in each of his last three contests, going 3-for-5 with a double on July 17 vs. Lansing. During the month of July, he has a slash line of .293/.400/.466. In 2019, Brennan slashed .266/.354/.369 with 11 doubles, four triples, a homer and 32 RBI with the AZL Indians (Rookie) and Mahoning Valley (Low-A). Brennan was the only Wildcat taken in the 2019 MLB Draft, as he was taken in the eighth round (No. 250 overall) by the Cleveland Indians.

Brett Lockwood, Daytona Tortugas (Low-A, Cincinnati Reds)
Lockwood has appeared in 16 games in his ­first minor league season, posting a 3.16 ERA with 33 strikeouts in 25 1/3 innings pitched. He has registered a pair of holds and owns a WHIP of 1.48 with opponents hitting .215 against him. In his last appearance on July 15, Lockwood went a season-long four innings and struck out four. He has held opponents scoreless in 10 of 16 games this season. Lockwood spent two seasons at K-State (2019-20) with a 3.22 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 17 relief appearances. He was a nondrafted signee of the Cincinnati Reds following the shortened 2020 MLB Draft.­
 
Nate Griep, ACL Rockies (Rookie, Colorado Rockies)
Griep was assigned to the Arizona Complex League (ACL) Rockies on Jun 28 and made his season debut on July 13. He has made two appearances for the ACL Rockies (one start) and has totaled two innings without a run allowed and five strikeouts. Griep started against the ACL Rangers in his season debut, striking out the side in his inning of work. Griep added another scoreless frame on July 17, striking out two against the ACL Diamondbacks. In 2019, Griep spent time with the Biloxi Shuckers (Double-A) and the San Antonio Missions (Triple-A) within the Milwaukee Brewers organization. He was claimed off waivers by the Colorado Rockies following the 2019 season. In his six-year minor league career, Griep has a 3.14 ERA with a 13-7 record to go with 110 saves in 127 opportunities. He has struck out 237 hitters in 205 career appearances. He has been named an all-star each of the last three seasons he has pitched and was an eighth-round selection by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 MLB Draft.

Wicks was drafted in the first round (21st overall) by the Chicago Cubs.
 
Carson Seymour, New York Mets
Seymour was drafted in the sixth round (172nd overall) by the New York Mets.
 
Zach Kokoska, Colorado Rockies
Kokoska was drafted in the 10th round (290th overall) by the Colorado Rockies.
 
Eric Torres, Los Angeles Angels
Torres was drafted in the 14th round (411th overall) by the Los Angeles Angels.
 
Kasey Ford, Houston Astros
Ford signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Houston Astros following the 2021 MLB Draft.
 
 
SENIORS IN 2021-22
Austin Garrett, Mankato MoonDogs (Northwoods League)
Garrett is playing for the Mankato (Minnesota) MoonDogs of the Northwoods League. In 22 games this season, he has put together a slash line of .234/.354/.344 with four doubles, a home run and 12 RBI. Garrett has six hits over his last six contests, going 6-for-19 with two doubles and four driven in during that span. On July 13, he went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI against Duluth. The MoonDogs finished the first half of the season in second place of the Great Plains West division (24-9) and are 8-6 during the second half of the season.
 
JUNIORS IN 2021-22
Griffin Hassall, Sioux Falls Sunfish (The Expedition League)
Hassall has made six starts for the Sioux Falls Sunfish, going 2-1 with a 4.09 ERA. He has struck out 29 while walking eight in 33 innings. Hassall earned the win in each of his last two starts, striking out four over seven innings in a 3-2 win over Fremont. He struck out four over 5 2/3 innings with two earned runs allowed against Pierre on July 2. He struck out seven hitters in seven innings in back-to-back outings vs. Wheat City and Hastings. Over his last four starts, he has 22 strikeouts against five walks. In their inaugural season, the Sunfish went 14-17 during the first half of the season and are currently 11-6 during the second half and are in second place in the Clark Division.
 
Cole Johnson, Winnipesaukee Muskrats (New England Collegiate Baseball League)
Johnson is playing for the Winnipesaukee Muskrats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League and was named an NECBL All-Star. In 18 games, Johnson has a slash line of .292/.375/.589 with three doubles, six home runs and 11 RBI while stealing 13 bases. He has five hits, two homers and three RBI over his last four games, going 2-for-3 on July 17 against Keene. Johnson put together a nine-game hitting streak from June 16-July 10, including five multi-hit efforts. He went 2-for-6 against Upper Valley on July 10 to cap his season-long hitting streak that included 10 stolen bases. The Muskrats are 11-18 and in sixth place in the Northern Division standings.
 
Dylan Phillips, Harwich Mariners (Cape Cod Baseball League)
Phillips made his debut with the Harwich Mariners of the Cape Cod League on July 17 and in three games has a slash line of .250/.250/.250. He went 2-for-4 in his last outing against Yarmouth-Dennis on July 17 and was 1-for-4 in his debut vs. Falmouth. The Mariners are 12-7-4 and in second place in the East Division standings.
 

SOPHOMORES IN 2020-21
Elijah Dale, Alaska GoldPanners (Alaska Baseball League)
Playing for the Alaska GoldPanners of the Alaska Baseball League, Dale has made six appearances on the mound with five games in the field. On the hill, Dale is 0-1 with a 6.42 ERA (5 ER, 7 IP) with four strikeouts and five walks. He has held opponents scoreless in four of his last five outings, going a season-long two innings with just one hit allowed on June 30 against the Seattle Studs. He struck out two in a perfect inning of relief on July 4. At the plate, he is 0-for-10 with six walks, two runs scored and two stolen bases. The GoldPanners are 21-9 this season.
 
Nick Goodwin, Bourne Braves (Cape Cod Baseball League)
In 18 games with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League, Goodwin is slashing .226/.281/.302 with a double, home run and five RBI. He went 3-for-4 with two RBI vs. Yarmouth-Dennis on July 10 and was 1-for-4 with a stolen base on July 13 against Hyannis. On June 23 against Falmouth, Goodwin went 4-for-5 with a double, home run and two RBI in a 13-8 victory. The Braves are 18-2-3 and atop the West Division standings.
 
Dom Hughes, Alaska GoldPanners (Alaska Baseball League)
Hughes, with the Alaska GoldPanners of the Alaska Baseball League, has put together a slash line of .226/.369/.396 in 20 games this season. He has two doubles, two triples, a home run and 10 RBI while drawing nine walks, stealing 19 bases and scoring 17 runs. Hughes was 2-for-4 with a walk in his last contest on July 19 and has recorded six hits over his last six games. He went 1-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and two stolen bases on July 13. The GoldPanners are 21-9 this season.
 
Dominic Johnson, Hyannis Harbor Hawks (Cape Cod Baseball League)
Johnson has played 19 games with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks of the Cape Cod League, slashing .221/.303/.338 with two home runs and six RBI. He is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak and produced back-to-back two-hit games on July 17-18. During that stretch, he is 9-for-26 (.346) with a home run and three RBI. He has walked seven times, stole four bases and scored seven runs on the year. The Harbor Hawks are 4-19 and in fifth place in the West Division standings.
 
Cameron Uselton, Princeton WhistlePigs (Appalachian Baseball League)
In 25 games (21 starts) with the Princeton WhistlePigs of the Appalachian League, Uselton has a slash line of .211/.404/.225 with a double and eight RBI. He has drawn 16 walks, stole two bases and scored 12 times. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI on July 16 vs. Burlington and 2-for-2 with two runs scored on July 9 vs. Johnson City. Uselton put together a five-game hitting streak from June 16-20, going 6-for-19 with an RBI and five runs scored in that span. Princeton is 21-16 and in second place in the East Division standings
 

FRESHMAN IN 2020-21
Brady Day, Princeton WhistlePigs (Appalachian Baseball League)
Day is playing for the Princeton WhistlePigs of the Appalachian League and was named an Appy League All-Star. Day has a slash line of .276/.353/.422 with six doubles, a triple, three home runs and 26 RBI in 31 games (30 starts). He has five base hits and driven in five runs in his last six games and went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored on July 16 vs. Burlington. He is second on the team in RBI and steals (5). Day did not appear in a game for K-State during the 2021 season (redshirt). Princeton is 21-16 and in second place in the East Division standings.
 
Kaelen Culpepper, Norwich Sea Unicorns (Futures Collegiate Baseball League)
Culpepper is playing for the Norwich Sea Unicorns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League and has a team-best .320 batting average to go with a .449 on-base percentage and .410 slugging percentage. Culpepper was named a FCBL All-Star, going 2-for-4 with an RBI in the FCBL All-Star Game. On the season, he has recorded six doubles, a homer and driven in 15 while stealing nine bases. He has four multi-hit games over his last six contests, including a 3-for-4, two-RBI effort on July 10 against Westfield. Culpepper was named FCBL Player of the Week on July 5 after going 4-for-11 with a home run and five RBI during the week. The Sea Unicorns are 20-20 and in fifth place in the FCBL standings.
 
Dylan Hufft, U.S. Nationals (U.S. Nationals Baseball League)
Hufft was selected to the U.S. Nationals Upperclass Scout Team for the 2021 summer season.
 
Brendan Jones, Pittsfield Suns (Futures Collegiate Baseball League)
With the Pittsfield Suns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, Jones has a slash line of .264/.369/.333 with five doubles, 14 runs batted in and 12 steals in 22 games. He has five hits and three RBI over his last six games and has tallied six RBI over his last 10 contests. He went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI on July 5 against Westfield. The Suns are 22-18 and in third place in the FCBL standings.
 
Kyan Lodice, Norwich Sea Unicorns (Futures Collegiate Baseball League)
Lodice plays for the Norwich Sean Unicorns and has posted a slash line of .262/.373/.426 with five doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 runs batted in over 17 games. He has added five steals while drawing 10 walks and scoring eight times. Lodice turned in a season-high three hits on June 1 against the Westfield Starfires, going 3-for-5 with a triple and RBI. He has four multi-hit games, going 2-for-4 with a double on June 26 against the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Sea Unicorns are 20-20 and in fifth place in the FCBL standings.
 
Grant Nicholson, Pittsfield Suns (Futures Collegiate Baseball League)
Pitching for the Pittsfield Suns of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League, Nicholson is 1-1 with a 4.34 ERA. He has struck out 33 batters over 29 innings in nine games (six starts). He punched out six over four innings in his last start on July 16, scattering three hits with a pair of runs allowed.  He threw a scoreless inning of relief on July 4. On June 10, he logged five scoreless innings, allowing just one hit as he registered a season-high nine strikeouts in a 4-0 win over the Nashua Silver Knights. His performance earned him Futures League Pitcher of the Week honors. Nicholson did not appear in a game for K-State during the 2021 season (redshirt). The Suns are 22-18 and in third place in the FCBL standings.
 
Raphael Pelletier, Upper Valley Nighthawks (New England Collegiate Baseball League)
Pelletier has played in 16 games for Upper Valley Nighthawks of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He has put together a slash line of .245/.316/.265 with a double and nine RBI. Pelletier went 2-for-3 with two RBI on July 13 at Sanford and drove in a run in his last game on July 19 at Vermont. He posted back-to-back two-hit games against North Adams and Vermont (June 28-29), driving in three with a double. He has helped the Nighthawks to a 19-12 record, as they sit in second place in the Northern Division standings. Pelletier did not appear in a game for the Wildcats during the 2021 season (redshirt).
 
Andrew Rantz, Lawrence Travelers (Mid-Plains Baseball League)
In 20 games with the Lawrence Travelers of the Mid-Plains League, Rantz has a slash line of .259/.338/.466 with four doubles, a triple, three home runs and 12 RBI. He went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs batted in on July 13 against the Kansas City Monarchs. Rantz went 1-for-2 in the regular-season finale against Baldwin City on July 14. He has six multi-hit games on the season to go with seven walks, three stolen bases and eight runs scored. The Travelers finished the regular season 10-21 and in sixth place in the Mid-Plains League standings.
 
Tyler Ruhl, Pulaski River Turtles (Appalachian Baseball League)
Ruhl has a 3-2 record with a 2.12 ERA in seven starts for the Pulaski River Turtles of the Appalachian League. He has tallied 27 strikeouts over 34 innings and opponents are hitting .234 against him. He struck out a season-high seven over five innings in his last start on July 13, picking up the win after not allowing an earned run and scattering five hits. He has gone at least five innings in five of his last six starts. He logged six scoreless with just three hits allowed against Danville in a 4-0 win on June 22. On June 15 against Johnson City, he allowed one run on three hits with a season-high five strikeouts.  Ruhl did not appear in a game for K-State during the 2021 season (redshirt). The River Turtles are 23-14 and leading the East Division.
