Gruszczynska Competes in ITA Consolation Finals

The Wildcats will compete in the Big 12 Fall Tournament in November

Freshman Rozalia Gruszczynska highlighted a strong weekend by the Kansas State women's tennis team, as she advanced to the ITA Central Region Championship singles consolation bracket finals on Sunday (October 16) in Stillwater, Okla.
 
After falling to Wichita State's Natsumi Kurshashi, 6-4, 6-1, on Friday (October 14) to land in the consolation bracket round of 32, Gruszczynska earned straight-set victories over Vivian Lai of SE Missouri State (6-2, 6-2) and Oral Roberts' Aliksandra Lebedeva (6-3, 6-2) before being defeated by Iowa State's Christin Hsieh, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, in the consolation bracket finals.
 
Senior Rosanna Maffei and sophomore Florentine Dekkers competed on Saturday (October 15) in the singles main draw round of 32, Maffei faced Iowa State's Miska Kadleckova but retired during the match, 6-1. Dekkers was defeated by Arkansas' Kelly Keller in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 1-6.
 
In addition to these matches, the Wildcats played in a number of bonus matches at the tournament in both singles and doubles.
 
BONUS MATCHES
  • Senior Manami Ukita was subbed in on Saturday to compete in one singles match against North Dakota's Andrea Jansson, where she was victorious 3-6, 6-4 and 10-7 in a tiebreaker.
  • Freshman Vanesa Suarez competed on Sunday against North Dakota's Angela Georgieva where she was victorious, 6-1, 6-4.
  • Dekkers was defeated in two sets, 7-6, 7-5, by Oklahoma's Dana Guzman.
  • Both doubles teams of Ukita/Dekkers and Suarez/Gruszczynska faced opponents from Iowa and were defeated, 6-1 and 6-4, respectively.
