K-State Rallies to Upend Iowa State in Overtime, 75-69

Feb 12, 2022 | Men's Basketball

AMES, Iowa – Kansas State scored 9 of the last 12 points in overtime, including a dagger 3-pointer from the corner by junior Markquis Nowell, to complete its 15-point second-half rally against Iowa State, as the Wildcats posted a 75-69 victory over the Cyclones on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 13,477 fans at Hilton Coliseum.

K-State (13-11, 5-7 Big 12), which trailed by 15 points just a minute into the second half, used an 18-4 run over a near 9-minute span to take a 60-58 lead on a jumper by sophomore Ish Massoud with 4:09 remaining. ISU responded with 5 straight points to retake the lead at 63-60 before sophomore Nijel Pack tied the game at 63-all on his fourth 3-pointer of the day with 2:36 to play. No one was able to score in last few minutes of regulation, as the teams went into overtime for the first time since 2010.

In overtime, the teams were knotted at 66-all with 2 minutes remaining before a steal and fast-break layup by fifth-year senior Mike McGuirl gave K-State the lead for good at 68-66 with 1:50 to play. After a miss by Iowa State, Nowell knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner off a feed from fifth-year senior Mark Smith to push the lead to 71-66 with just over a minute remaining. A pair of free throws by sophomore Selton Miguel, who was making his return from injury, and a dunk by Massoud finished off the scoring as the Wildcats won their third straight overtime game dating back to 2018.

The 15-point deficit overcome to win represented the second-largest in a road conference game and the most-ever in the Big 12 era, as the only one greater came as the Wildcats rallied from 16 points down at Oklahoma on February 23, 1993. Overall, it represents the ninth-largest in school history and the largest since rallying from a school-record 21-point deficit to West Virginia at home on January 9, 2019.

K-State once again got a brilliant performance from Pack, who led 4 Wildcats in double figures with 19 points on 7-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, a career-best 2 blocks and a steal in a career-high 40 minutes. He was joined in double figures by Nowell and Smith, who finished with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Massoud had his first double-digit scoring game in more than a month with 11 points off the bench. Nowell had a team-high 6 assists and 3 steals, while Smith grabbed a game-high 9 rebounds.

McGuirl added a solid line with 9 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals in 25 minutes in his fourth straight start.

The Wildcats are now 5-1 this season when at least 4 players score in double figures.

Pack (40), Smith (44) and Nowell (44) all registered career-highs in minutes played.

Iowa State (16-9, 3-9 Big 12) was led by an impressive night by Brockington, who led all scorers with 27 points on 11-of-17 field goals, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and a perfect 3-of-3 effort from the free throw line. He was joined in double figures by fellow senior transfer Aljaz Kunc, who scored 10 of the Cyclones' first 13 points before finishing with 19 on 6-of-12 shooting, including 5-of-9 from long range.

The win gave K-State its longest winning streak (4) over ISU since winning 8 in a row from 2006-10, including back-to-back victories at Hilton Coliseum for the first time since 2017 and 2019.

The Wildcats, which was playing in their first Big 12 regular-season overtime game since February 1, 2017, and their first overall since a 60-56 win at UNLV on November 9, 2019, is now 71-46 all-time in overtime games, including 5-5 under head coach Bruce Weber. The team is now 10-3 all-time in overtime games vs. ISU, as the Cyclones are the second-most frequent overtime opponent (13) behind Kansas (15).

KEY STRETCH(ES)
Iowa State jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead on the strong play of senior transfer Aljaz "Jaz" Kunc, who scored the game's first 8 points and was responsible for 10 of the Cyclones' first 13 points. K-State finally ended the scoring drought with a layup by sophomore Ish Massoud at the 16:32 mark.

The Wildcats got back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Nijel Pack to close the deficit to 30-26 with 5:17 remaining in the first half, but the Cyclones closed out the half by scoring 10 of the last 12 points to take a 40-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.

ISU's momentum continued to start the second half, as senior transfer Izaiah Brockington got 5 quick points, including a 3-pointer that hit off the top of the standard and back through the hoop that gave the Cyclones a 45-30 advantage with just under 19 minutes to play. The Wildcats got the deficit to single-digits at 45-37 on a pair of free throws by fifth-year senior Mike McGuirl just over 2 minutes later, but the Cyclones pushed back ahead at 54-42 on a jumper by senior George Conditt VI with 12:46 to play.

An old-fashioned 3-point play by fifth-year senior Mark Smith ignited what would become an 18-4 run that would give K-State its first lead at 60-58 on a jumper by Massoud with 4:09 remaining. Five different Wildcats scored in the run, including 5 points each by Smith and junior Markquis Nowell. The Cyclones would respond with 5 straight points to take a 63-60 lead with just 3 minutes remaining, but Pack tied it up at 63 with his fourth 3-pointer with 2:36 to play. Each team missed two 3-pointers in the last 1:15 to force overtime.

The teams were tied at 66-all with 2:13 left in the overtime period before McGuirl gave K-State the lead for good at 68-66 on a fast-break layup after a steal of Kunc with 1:50 remaining. Although McGuirl missed the free throw, Nowell gave the Wildcats' extra cushion at 71-66 with a 3-pointer from the corner on a feed from Smith with 1:04 to play. Sophomore Selton Miguel was fouled and hit both free throws to extend the lead to 73-66 with 34 seconds before Massoud finished off the scoring with a dunk with 12 seconds for the 75-69 victory.

PLAYER(S) OF THE GAME
Sophomore Nijel Pack led the Wildcats in scoring for the fourth consecutive game with 19 points on 7-of-10 field goals, including 4-of-5 from 3-point range, to go with 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocked shots in nearly a career-best 40 minutes of action. He has now scored in double figures in 21 of 22 games played.

Junior Marquis Nowell hit the game-clinching 3-pointer in overtime to finish with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, to go with a team-high 6 assists and 3 steals in a career-best 44 minutes.

Fifth-year senior Mark Smith nearly collected another double-double with 15 points on 4-of-12 field goals and 6-of-8 free throws to go with a game-high 9 rebounds and 2 assists in a career-best 44 minutes.

IN THEIR WORDS
K-State Head Coach Bruce Weber
On the game…
"I'm just really excited for our guys and proud of them. I thought we came in with a pretty good mindset. We've had good practices the last couple days. I thought even shootaround this morning had good energy. Our whole thing was to bring that juice. We've talked about passion, Coach (Jermaine) Henderson had the scout, and he found a little quote about bringing the juice and energy. But he also told them that you don't understand that when they (Iowa State) cut and they move and when they play at a high level, you can't simulate that in practice. They came out and they had the juice from the beginning. They jumped us. Obviously (Aljaz) Kunc hit some big shots. He had not been shooting like that. My biggest fear was somebody else would have a big day and obviously he was the one who got them going. Then we settled down and we cut it several times in the first half where we got to five, seven, whatever, but they just kept coming at us. They beat us in transition, they beat us every which way. Then the second half, I thought we did a pretty good job of playing pretty well but they have a shot that goes straight up, hits the backboard, drops in for three. But at the end, the plays went our way and our guys made plays and made shots. I thought that our energy on defense was the thing that changed the game in the second half. Mike (McGuirl) started I thought with some steals. Selton (Miguel) gave us a good boost with his energy on defense. We went small several times with all guards, and we also went with Ish (Massoud). I'm happy for him that he was able to really be productive for us with 11 points. Markquis (Nowell) struggled the other night, had a really good game, not only scoring, to hit that big dagger three off that pass from Mark (Smith). But six assists, two turnovers, three steals. Mark (Smith) again, almost a double-double and then Nijel (Pack) is consistent, 7-for-10, 4-for-5, three assists. Just a good team win, and you get a Quad 1 win on the road."
