MANHATTAN, Kansas – Kansas State student-athletes continue to receive recognition for their excellence in the classroom, as eight Wildcats received the 12th annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, which is the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor, in an announcement by the league office on Wednesday.
The eight recipients from K-State are: Emily Crain, soccer (Kinesiology), Maguire Sullivan, soccer (Biomedical Engineering), Kaitlyn Henke, rowing (Interior Architecture & Product Design), Ellie Hahn, rowing (Integrative Physiology, Gerontology), Kelsey Ladlie, rowing (Life Sciences, Integrated Health Studies), Kate Odgers, rowing (Biology), Jessica Schenk, rowing (Marketing) and Kassidy Johnson, women's track and field/cross country (Spanish/Dietetics/Nutrition and Health).
In total, 166 student-athletes from Big 12 member institutions earned the honor in 2022. The award is in memory of Lage, who served as the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and the Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 until his death in 2007. He was the chairman on three occasions (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).
Lage had been a member of the Oklahoma State family since 1966, when he joined the College of Business Administration as an assistant professor. During his tenure at OSU, he served as the director of graduate studies in the department of economics (1974-77), head of the department of economics and finance (1978-84), director of the OSU Center for International Trade and Development (1985-87), and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the college of business administration (1997-2004).
In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.
The Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award recipients' names will be featured on the video board at the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, scheduled for March 9-12 at the T-Mobile Center and March 10-13 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
K-State, a Tier 1 Carnegie Foundation Institution, has had an outstanding start to the 2021-22 academic year by both individual student-athletes and by its teams.
The soccer program was honored this season by the United Soccer Coaches with its third Team Academic Award for their work in the classroom.
To date K-State student-athletes have been recognized by the conference with 74 Academic All-Big 12 recipients.
Brookelynn Entz of the soccer program was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Third Team, while football's Landry Weber and Deuce Vaughn and women's basketball's Ayoka Lee were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII First Team.
K-State Athletics saw 32 student-athletes receive their degrees in December 2021 graduation ceremonies in Bramlage Coliseum, with 18 obtaining their undergraduate degrees while the additional 14 earned graduate degrees, a second undergraduate degree or masters certificate.
K-State ranks among the league's best in terms of academic success as it continues to set a national standard in terms of APR, as all programs are currently well above the required NCAA standard.
