The fifth-year senior nearly posted a triple-double for the West All-Stars
NEW ORLEANS – Fifth-year senior Mark Smith enjoyed a strong showing at the NABC – Reese's Division I College All-Star Game on Friday afternoon (April 1), as he earned team most valuable player (MVP) honors in the West All-Stars' 115-103 loss to the East All-Stars at the Caesars Superdome as part of Final Four weekend.
Smith registered a near triple-double for the West All-Stars, scoring 13 points on 6-of-12 field goals, including 1-of-4 from 3-point range, to go with game-highs in both rebounds (10) and assists (7) in 23 minutes of action. He was one of five West All-Stars to score in double figures, as New Orleans' Derek St. Hilare led the squad with 16 points.
The victorious East All-Stars were paced by UConn's Tyrese Martin, who led all scorers with 22 points, while Buffalo's Jeenathan Williams added 18 points. Richmond's Grant Golden earned team MVP honors for the East after posting 14 points, a team-high tying 8 rebounds and 4 assists in the win.
Smith was one of 21 seniors to participate in the annual game, which features the top senior players in NCAA Division I and consists of two teams representing the East and West.
The West All-Stars were coached by current Missouri head coach Dennis Gates and included BYU's Alex Barcello, Kentucky's Davion Mintz, West Virginia's Taz Sherman, Arkansas' Stanley Umude, Michigan State's Gabe Brown and Marcus Bingham, Jr., Vermont's Ryan Davis and Belmont's Nick Muszynski.
Smith was the first Wildcat to play in the All-Star Game since Barry Brown, Jr., in 2019.
Smith made the most of his extra season at K-State in 2021-22, as the fifth-year senior was named to the All-Big 12 Third Team as well as the All-Newcomer Team. He led the Wildcats in double-doubles (8), rebounding (8.4 rpg.) and defensive rebounds (6.7 drpg.), while he ranked second in scoring (12.7 ppg.), 20-point games (5) and double-digit scoring games (23). He became the shortest player to lead a power conference in rebounding, while he finished second in the Big 12 in double-doubles. Smith's 260 total rebounds this season were the most since Michael Beasley set the school record with 408 in 2007-08.
