K-State’s Gilliam Named Among Impactful Assistant Coaches

May 17, 2023 | Women's Basketball

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State women's basketball assistant coach Ebony Gilliam was once again named as one of the top women's basketball assistant coaches, as she was included among the 2023 list for the "Most Impactful High Major Assistant Coaches in Division I Basketball" by Silver Waves Media.

Gilliam was one of seven Big 12 assistants on the prestigious 50-person list, including West Virginia's JC Carter and Erin Grant, Texas' Elena Lovato, TCU's Xavier Lopez, Kansas' Morgan Paige and Oklahoma State's Jhasmin Player. This is the second straight year Gilliam was included on the list.

Gilliam enters her 10th season on head coach Jeff Mittie's staff in 2023-24 at K-State. She is in her second stint as an assistant coach with the Wildcats. In her first three seasons at K-State from 2014-17, Gilliam served as an assistant coach on Mittie's staff, then transitioned to the Director of Recruiting Operations for the next four seasons from 2017-21.

In her second stint as an assistant coach, Gilliam helped the Wildcats to consecutive postseason appearances in 2021-22 and 2022-23, as K-State reached the second round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament and the third round of the 2023 WNIT.

Gilliam helped shape the K-State roster for the 2022-23 season, by aiding in the recruitment of transfer Gabby Gregory. The guard from Tulsa, Oklahoma, achieved her first career All-Big 12 First Team honor with K-State last season. Gilliam has also had a hand in shaping the roster for the upcoming 2023-24 season, as she aided in the recruitment of forward Alexis Hess (Blandon, Pa./Fleetwood Area HS).

Prior to her time at K-State, Gilliam served as an assistant coach at her alma mater, TCU, from 2012-14.

Gilliam, formerly Ebony Shaw, experienced one of the most successful playing careers in TCU history from 2000-04. At the conclusion of her playing career, she ranked tied for second in school history with 130 career games played and was eighth in starts with 87. She scored 1,156 points and finished her career ranked sixth on TCU's all-time scoring list. Overall, she ranked among the top-10 players in 13 major career statistical categories.

During her playing career at TCU, Gilliam helped the Horned Frogs to the first four NCAA Tournament appearances in school history. The Frogs advanced to the second round in each trip to the tournament. In addition to the postseason appearances, Gilliam also helped TCU claim its first four conference titles in 2001 (WAC regular season and tournament), 2002 (Conference USA regular season) and 2003 (Conference USA tournament).

Following her time with TCU on the court, Gilliam played one year of professional basketball for Keflavik, Iceland. During her professional career, Gilliam helped her team capture the National Icelandic Cup Championship, while averaging 23 points per game, 9.5 rebounds and three steals a contest.

K-State concluded its 55th season of action with a 19-17 record and the 33rd postseason appearance in program history with its seventh bid into the WNIT. Earlier this season, the Wildcats became the 19th program in NCAA Division I history to surpass the 1,000-win mark.
