MANHATTAN, Kan. - Carla Bernat, who was an All-American women's golfer last season at Tulane and ranks in the top 100 of the World Amateur Golf Rankings, has transferred to K-State and will join the Wildcats for the 2023-24 season, head coach Stew Burke announced today.
A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat was named the 2023 American Athletic Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, a Second Team All-American by the Women's Golf Coaches Association and an Honorable Mention All-American by Golfweek. She spent the last two seasons competing for the Green Wave under Burke.
"We are delighted to have Carla joining us at K-State," Burke said. "She is truly a world-class player and brings great experience and depth to our team. I've enjoyed coaching her and getting to know her over the last four years. I know that she will add to the culture that we are looking to build upon for K-State women's golf moving forward."
This past season, Bernat set the Tulane single-season stroke average record at 70.65 as she ranked in the top-20 in the individual Golfstat rankings throughout the entire 2022-23 campaign. The AAC Conference Player of the Month in October, she captured a pair of individual wins as she carded a 10-under par 206 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate and an 8-under par 208 at the Jim West Challenge.
After beginning the 2023 spring season with a victory at the Tulane Classic thanks to a score of 2-over par 218, Bernat went on to set a new Tulane 54-hole score record with a 13-under par 203 at the Trinity Forest Invitational. Additionally, she earned AAC Player of the Week accolades in late March after finishing in second place at the Florida State Match-Up following a 54-hole score of 2-under par 214.
Bernat was honored for her play throughout the season as she earned an individual berth into the NCAA Athens (Ga.) Regional where she tied for 27th at 7-over par 223.
Following her sophomore season of 2022-23, Bernat took part in the prestigious Arnold Palmer Cup as one of 12 women's golfers for Team International.
Originally joining the Green Wave program in the spring of 2022, Bernat earned All-AAC honors and produced three top-10 finishes in her first seven collegiate events. She helped Tulane win the American Athletic Conference Championship in 2022 as she tied for seventh individually at 8-over par 224. In the NCAA Stillwater Regional, she came in 10th with a score of 3-over par 219, finishing one stroke shy of advancing to the NCAA Championship as an individual.
Prior to her time at Tulane, Bernat claimed six wins in WAGR events, including the Campeonato de Espana Amateur Championship - Spain's premier ladies stroke play championship - with a score of 12-under par. She was also a member of the Spanish Girls National Team at the 2020 European Girls Team Championship, leading the Spaniards in the stroke play and going undefeated in match play. Additionally, she came in fourth place at the 2020 Junior Orange Bowl in Coral Gables, Florida.
