K-State Surges Up Leaderboard at Ron Moore Intercollegiate
Oct 05, 2024 | Women's Golf
HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – The Kansas State women's golf team put together a score of 11-under par 277 on Saturday – tied for the second lowest round in school history – to move from ninth place to first place during the second round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,611-yard Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
K-State holds a two-shot over second-place UNLV entering the final round as the Wildcats are at 12-under par 564. Their round of 277 tied for second in program history with last year's second round of the Westbrook Invitational and the first round of the Bruzzy Challenge in 2019. K-State was eight shots shy of the school record, which was set earlier this year at a par-70 course during the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic.
"I'm really proud of how we played as a team today. The ladies knew they would have to shoot a low number to keep themselves in the competition, and they responded from the first hole," head coach Stew Burke said. "This is a golf course where you have to be very patient because you know you'll get chances, but there's also some holes that can cause some difficulty. Sophie (Bert) really led the charge well, along with Alenka (Navarro) before Carla (Bernat) and Nanami (Nakashima) finished off the round making sure we were double digits under par. There is a lot of golf left to play, and I know the ladies are keen to continue their good play from today during tomorrow's final round."
The Wildcats received under-par rounds on Saturday from senior Sophie Bert, sophomore Alenka Navarro and senior Carla Bernat.
Bert tied her career-low round with a 6-under par 66 as the transfer from East Tennessee State shot out of the gate with four birdies over her first five holes, going bogey-free and 5-under par on the front 9. The Deurle, Belgium native enters the final round in fifth place at 6-under par 138.
Navarro, a product of Mexico City, bounced back from a 7-over par score on Friday by firing a 4-under par 68 during the second round. She carded three birdies and a bogey on each side of the course on Saturday, moving up 43 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 35th place at 3-over par 147.
A native of Castellon, Spain, Bernat turned in a 1-under par 71 on Saturday with two birdies and a bogey, bringing her two-round total to 1-under par 143. She enters the final round tied for 15th place.
Freshman Nanami Nakashima was 2-over par through the first 16 holes on Saturday but rallied with birdies on the final two holes to get back to even par. She remains in a tie for 10th place at 3-under par 141.
Junior Noa van Beek carded a 4-over par 76 during the second round, and she is tied for 50th place at 6-over par 150.
The individual leaderboard is paced by Minnesota's Isabella McCauley at 10-under par 134. She holds a three-shot lead over a three-way tie for second place entering the final round.
The final round of the Ron Moore Intercollegiate will be played on Sunday, and live results of the event can be found on Birdiefire.
