Wentworth Named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
Apr 22, 2024 | Baseball
MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State right-handed pitcher Jackson Wentworth was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, following the league's announcement Monday. Wentworth is the third Wildcat this season to earn a weekly Big 12 award, joining Brady Day (player) and Jacob Frost (co-newcomer).
On the week, the redshirt-sophomore combined to toss nine innings of three-hit, one-run ball over three appearances while striking out 13 and posting a 2-0 record. He leads the Big 12 and is third in the nation with a .85 WHIP, while his 7.78 strikeout-to-walk ratio is ninth in the country.
Wentworth, a native of Urbandale, Iowa, displayed a dominant relief performance at Northeastern, as he tossed a perfect 10th and 11th with four strikeouts to earn the win.
In his first start in over a year against nationally ranked Oklahoma State, Wentworth punched out seven of the first nine batters he faced, including striking out the side in the first and third innings. He took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning and gave up his only run of the week on a solo home run in the sixth.
With Saturday's victory, Wentworth helped lead K-State to its first series win over OSU since 2010.
Earlier this season, Wentworth and Frost paired for the ninth no-hitter in K-State's 124-year baseball history, shutting out Cincinnati 4-0. The Cats went on to win the series, marking the first opening Big 12 series victory since 2013.
K-State will be back at Tointon Family Stadium Tuesday, when the Cats host Omaha (12-23, 10-8 Summit) at 6 p.m. The midweek game can be seen on Big 12 Now on ESPN+ and the ESPN app, while radio coverage is available on News Radio KMAN (93.3 FM, 1350 AM). A free live streaming audio available for all games at KStateSports.com/watch and on the K-State Sports app.
