Chogsomjav Sisters Advance in Singles Main Draw at ITA Central Regional

The Wildcats continue to compete in singles matches in the regional tournament
NORMAN, Okla.- Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav were successful in the ITA Central Regional Championship singles first round on Friday (October 17) at Headington Family Tennis Center.

In the main draw, Martaa faced Tatyana Nikolenko from Wichita State, going back and forth in a high scoring first set before winning 7-5, 6-3. Martaa advanced to the singles main draw after two victories in the qualifying draw on Thursday. After a straight sets sweep in her first match, she battled back in three sets in the next round against Zoe Lazar from Missouri, for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win.

After automatically qualifying for the main draw, Maralgoo's first singles match was against the hosting Sooner's Laura Brunkel. After a tiebreaker in the first set she continued to gain momentum in a high scoring match for a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win.

Maralgoo also found success in the first two rounds of doubles matches with sophomore partner Chanel Rustemova. Starting the day with a 8-5 win over Alva Norberg and Andrea Pineda from North Dakota, the duo fell just short during the round of 16 in a tiebreaker at 7-8 (6-8) against Reya Coe and Yuzu Miyoshi of Nebraska-Lincoln.

On Thusday, freshman Diana Smolinska also had success in the singles qualifying draw, defeating Francisca Gomez-Weiss from St. Louis, 6-2, 6-1. During the second round she fell short in three sets after starting off strong against Arkansas State's Lilly Cvanciger, 6-3, 4-6, 1-6.

Junior Margaret Jaraczewski encountered a three set match against Ethel Li from North Dakota. After dropping the high scoring first set she battled back for a 6-4 decision in the second but couldn't keep the momentum, losing 5-7, 6-4, 3-6. Jaraczewski is now 3-3 in three set matches this fall.

On Saturday (October 18) Martaa and Maralgoo will continue to advance in the singles main draw. Addison Renfro, Mallory Renfro, Rustemova and Smolinska will all compete in extra singles matches as well.
