K-State Extends Streak with 81-73 win over 16/17 Kansas

Feb 08, 2025 | Men's Basketball

Senior David N'Guessan paced four Wildcats in double figures with 20 points.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Senior David N'Guessan led four Wildcats in double figures with 20 points, as Kansas State extended its winning streak to 5 games with a near wire-to-wire 81-73 win over No. 16/17 Kansas in the 303rd edition of the Dillons Sunflower Showdown before a sold-out crowd of 11,010 fans at Bramlage Coliseum.
Ā
K-State (12-11, 6-6 Big 12) led for more than 37 minutes, using an 18-5 run midway through the first half to assert control of the game en route to a 44-36 lead at the half. The lead grew to as many as 15 points in the second half, as the Wildcats earned their third consecutive win at home over the Jayhawks for the first time in more than 40 years since a 4-game streak from 1981-83.
Ā
The 5-game overall winning streak is the longest for K-State since a similar 5-game streak from Nov. 22 to Dec. 9, 2023, while it is the longest such streak in Big 12 play since a 5-game winning streak from Jan. 9 to Jan. 22, 2019. Head coach Jerome Tang is now 12-3 at home vs. AP Top 25 opponents, including 3-1 this season. It was the Wildcats' fourth Top 25 win of the season.
Ā
Tang is the first Wildcat coach since Jack Gardner to win his first 3 home games since 1947-49.
Ā
K-State topped the 80-point mark for the seventh time this season, including the third time in the last 4 Big 12 games, behind a balanced attack led by N'Guessan's second consecutive 20-point performance. It marked the first time in his career that the Dutch native has had consecutive 20-point games, as he hit on 9-of-13 field goals to go with a team-high 7 rebounds in 33 minutes.
Ā
N'Guessan was joined in double figures by junior Dug McDaniel (15 points) and seniors Coleman Hawkins (12 points) and Max Jones (12 points). McDaniel dished out a career-high 11 assists for his second career double-double. His 11 assists tie for the sixth-most in a conference game, including the most since Markquis Nowell had 14 at Baylor on Jan. 7, 2023.
Ā
Hawkins added 8 assists, 5 rebounds and a career-high 5 blocks to his performance. His 5 blocks tied for the fourth-most in a conference game, including the most since Will McNair Jr. had 5 blocks at Texas Tech last season.
Ā
Kansas (16-7, 7-5 Big 12) was led by senior Hunter Dickinson's 21 points.
Ā
Both teams shot exactly 50 percent from the field, as K-State made 33 of 66 attempts compared to Kansas' 30 of 60 attempts. However, the difference came from the 3-point line, as the Wildcats made 11 of 27 attempts (40.7 percent) compared to just 6 of 19 attempts (31.6 percent) for the Jayhawks. Kansas entered ranking 14th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage defense (29 percent). K-State has held 3 of its last 4 opponents to 33 percent or less from beyond the arc.
Ā
The Wildcats had 23 assists on their 33 made field goals with McDaniel (11 assists) and Hawkins (8 assists) combining for all but 4 of those assists.
Ā
Dickinson led three Jayhawks in double figures with a game-high 21 points on 8-of-16 field goals and 4-of-6 free throws to go with a game-best 9 rebounds and 4 assists. He was joined in double figures by fellow senior Zeke Mayo (15 points) and K.J. Adams (13 points).
Ā
The team split their 2 regular-season meetings after Kansas won 84-74 at home on Jan. 18. The Jayhawks still lead the all-time series, 206-97, including a 59-9 mark in the Big 12 era. It is the sixth-most played series (303) in Division I men's basketball history and the second-longest active rivalry as the schools have met every year since 1907.
Ā
K-State continues its homestand on Tuesday night, as the Wildcats host Big 12 newcomer and No. 20/20 Arizona (16-6, 10-1 Big 12) at 7 p.m., CT on ESPN+. Tickets can be purchased online at kstatesports.com/tickets or by phone (800) 221.CATS.

HEAD COACH JEROME TANG
Opening statement…
"First of all, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for this great opportunity he's given me. All glory goes to God for this one. Our guys have been so resilient, and they're a lot of fun to coach right now. And it's not really a lot of coaching right now, it's just letting them play and they want to win. We've said all year long, they like each other, and you can see that on the floor, so we're just blessed. Thank you to our students and our fans for showing up, it was a great environment. I've said that home-court advantage gives you a plus 10, and our crowd [just gave us] a plus 15, so they get credit for that. Once again, it was another great Big 12 game, and when we were losing, we had said to move on to the next one, and it's the same thing with wins. You got to tuck this one away, and move on to the next, because we got another great team coming in, and another great opportunity ahead of us."
Ā
On the confidence in the locker room…
"I don't know how to gauge confidence. I just know that we're having really good practices, and we're making good basketball plays. So, I think they believe in what we're doing and I believe in them."
Ā
On whether K-State is a tournament team…
"I felt we were a tournament team when we put the team together. I felt, even [after] we lost a player [Achor Achor], that we would still be a tournament team. I think we're good enough to win games in the tournament, but do we have the resume to do it? I don't know that. I'll leave that up to other people. Our goal is to win the next game and the way we do that is by winning practice tomorrow."
Ā
On Dug McDaniel's confidence and recent play…
"Confidence is a crazy thing, hard to get, easy to lose. What I like about Dug is that he's not letting negative plays impact his next play. That's what leaders do and that's what tough people do. I hope all of our guys have great confidence, but you still have to go out there and execute. So, I'm very proud of Dug and everyone else."
Ā
On Mobi Ikegweruka's impact off the bench and bench production as a whole…
"Isn't it fun to watch him? The stuff that he does, and how easy he scores the ball, you can just throw it up there, and he gets off the floor and drops it in. That's not coaching, that's his talent coming through, and his teammates trusting him. He's growing and learning. I thought CJ [Jones] was huge today off the bench too. Somebody had asked about bench production last game, and this was their opportunity. We needed them and they stepped up. So I'm excited about that, and yeah, Mobi's fun to watch."
Ā
On his 3-0 home start against Kansas as a head coach…
"This is a home-court advantage that we have. I want to win every home game, I want this to be the toughest place in the country to play, and I want to do my part for that, and I'm thankful that we have a fanbase that does their part."
Ā
On the impact of K-State alums Michael Beasley and Barry Brown Jr in the crowd and locker room…
"I just happen to be the person God put to steward this program at this time. This program belongs to the Michael Beasley's, Barry Brown's, and Kamau Stokes', and all of those guys. I hope they feel this place is home, and that they're welcome here all the time. I didn't like coaching against them, but I love the fact that they're part of the family and that I'm a part of this family now."
Ā
FIRST HALF
The teams went back and forth in the early going, as K-State scored 7 of the first 9 points, including a 3-pointer by junior Dug McDaniel to open the game. However, Kansas battled back to take an 8-7 lead behind a 6-0 run. Back-to-back baskets by senior David N'Guessan and McDaniel gave the Wildcats an 11-8 lead before the Jayhawks cut it to 13-12 at the first media timeout.
Ā
K-State maintained a 1-point at the second media timeout near the midway point, but back-to-back baskets by senior Coleman Hawkins ignited a 7-1 run that pushed the Wildcats ahead 29-22 and forced a timeout by head coach Bill Self at the 8:14 mark.
Ā
McDaniel continued the momentum out of the timeout with a 3-pointer, as consecutive baskets by N'Guessan and junior C.J. Jones extended the lead to 36-24. Another N'Guessan field goal, along with a layup by sophomore Mobi Ikegwuruka, forced another Jayhawk timeout with the Wildcats ahead 40-29 at the 4:18 mark.
Ā
Kansas used a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-36 with 6.5 seconds left before N'Guessan connected on a jumper from the corner to push K-State ahead 44-36 at the break.
Ā
Both teams shot better than 50 percent from the field in the first half, including 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from Kansas and 54.3 percent (19-of-35) from K-State.
Ā
N'Guessan led the Wildcats with 10 points, while senior K.J. Adams had a game-high 13 points.
Ā
SECOND HALF
Kansas opened the second half with a 3-pointer, but K-State responded with 8 of the next 10 points to push ahead 52-41 capped by a McDaniel 3-pointer. Another 3-pointer from Hawkins, a jumper from McDaniel and consecutive N'Guessan layups made it 61-47 at the first media timeout.
Ā
The Jayhawks scored 6 of the next 9 points to close to within 64-53 just after the second media timeout, but 3-pointers from senior Max Jones and junior Brendan Hausen, along with a jumper from Ikegwuruka, extended the lead to 72-59 at the third media timeout with 7:35 to play.
Ā
After a N'Guessan jumper pushed the lead back to 15 (74-59), Self called his third timeout with just over 5 minutes. A 3-pointer by senior Hunter Dickinson cut it to 74-62 at the final media timeout. A jumper out of the Jayhawks got it to within 10 points at 74-64, but the Wildcats responded with a jumper from McDaniel and 3-pointer from Hausen to push back ahead 79-64.
Ā
Kansas scored 9 of the last 11 points to close a double-digit lead to single digits, but it could get no closer as K-State won 81-73. Dickinson scored 13 of his game-high 21 points after halftime, while N'Guessan led the Wildcats with 10 points.
