MANHATTAN, Kan. – Maximus Martin continues to earn weekly honors for his prolific performance last weekend, as the junior was named the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week by the College Baseball Foundation on Tuesday.
The national award, which honors the nation's most outstanding shortstop, is the first in Martin's respective career while he is the first-ever K-State player to earn the weekly honor.
The Brooks Wallace Award is presented annually to honor the nation's top shortstop as a tribute to Brooks Wallace, a slick-fielding shortstop at Texas Tech from 1977-80 who passed away at age 27 after a courageous battle with leukemia. Prior to 2009, the award recognized the national player of the year.
Martin earns the recognition a day after being named the Golden Spikes Award Player of the Week and Big 12 Co-Newcomer of the Week.
A product of Edgewater Park, N.J, Martin turned in an incredible 2.714 OPS, after launching five home runs and tallying 12 RBI in the Wildcats three-game series sweep of William & Mary. Now leading the Big 12 with a season 1.735 OPS, Martin raised his batting average to .524, the third-highest in the country.
He became the first player since 2018 to drive in eight RBI in a single game, while achieving the first multi-homer game this season for K-State with his first-inning grand slam and three-run homer in the second in Saturday's series-clincher.
In the series finale, Martin homered in his fourth consecutive game with another two-homer game, marking the third straight game with a home run in the first inning. He finished 5-for-5 on the day, falling short of a triple of completing the cycle and became the first K-State player and fourth from the Big 12 to turn in a five-hit day.
K-State (9-5) takes on Creighton Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Charles Schwab Field, followed by a Wednesday nightcap at Omaha with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. at Tal Anderson Field. Following the games in Nebraska, the Cats will open Big 12 play at Tointon Family Stadium on Friday, March 14 with a three-game series against Utah (11-3).
Season and single-game tickets are now available and can be purchased by visiting KStateSports.com, call 1-800-221-CATS (2287), or stop by the K-State Athletics Ticket Office in Bramlage Coliseum.
