All six student-athletes added to their list of academic accomplishments this year

MANHATTAN, Kan. – K-State had six Wildcats earn the Big 12 Conference's highest academic honor, the Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, as announced on Wednesday (August 27).

Four student-athletes were named from the men's and women's track and field program, Emil Uhlin, Jourdin Edwards, Cecilia Fisher and Alexa Rios, while one woman was named from both the tennis, Veronika Kulhava, and rowing teams, Makenzie Storm.

These six athletes were all named to the Academic All-Big 12 team earlier this month while also accumulating other academic honors. Uhlin was named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-America Third Team after earning First Team All-America honors in the men's decathlon at the NCAA Championship in June.

Edwards and Kulhava also earned CSC honors being named to the Academic All-District team, while Kulhava was also named an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete.

Both Fisher and Rios were named to the fall and spring Academic All-Big 12 teams for the cross country and track and field seasons.

Lage had been a member of the Oklahoma State family since 1966, when he joined the College of Business Administration as an assistant professor. During his tenure at OSU, he served as the director of graduate studies in the department of economics (1974-77), head of the department of economics and finance (1978-84), director of the OSU Center for International Trade and Development (1985-87), and associate dean for research and graduate programs in the college of business administration (1997-2004).

In order to be eligible for the accolade, student-athletes must have lettered at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honoree, which can only be recognized once, should have 100 hours of earned credit with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.80 at the time of the nomination.
