Five Things to Know: Abdi Bashir Jr.

Bashir was one of the top scorers in the country at Monmouth in 2024-25.

Today we begin a series of "Get to Know" features on the newest members of the 2025-26 Kansas State men's basketball team. We start with junior transfer guard Abdi Bashir Jr. (Omaha, Neb./Monmouth), who is one of 10 newcomers, and five Division I transfers.

  1. Bashir was one of the top scorers in the country in 2024-25 at Monmouth.
 
As a sophomore, Bashir led Monmouth and the CAA (Coastal Athletic Association) in scoring at 20.1 points per game, while he was 16th in scoring and 25th in total points (663) in the NCAA. He posted five 30-point games, which tied for the most in program history, while he scored 20 or more points in 13 other contests. He scored a career-high 38 points at Rutgers on Nov. 15, 2024, which were the most points scored against the Scarlet Knight since 1977.
 
Bashir also had notable performances on the road against Michigan State (20 points), Wichita State (15 points), Stephen F. Austin (30 points), Seton Hall (28 points), Lehigh (22 points), Princeton (26 points) and Auburn (15 points) in non-conference play.
 
Bashir connected on 37.7 percent (222-of-589) from the field, including 38.3 percent (127-of-332) from 3-point range, and made 86.8 percent (92-of-106) of his free throws. He has scored nearly 900 points (872) in his career on 37.8 percent (298-of-789) shooting, including 38.4 percent (178-of-463) from 3-point range, and 86 percent (98-of-114) shooting from the free throw line.
 
Bashir jumped nearly 14 points per game from his true freshman (6.3 ppg.) to sophomore season.
 
  1. Bashir is a big threat from 3-point range.
 
Bashir led the NCAA in 3-point field goals/game (3.85) while he was second in total 3-point field goals (127) and 3-point field goals attempted (332) in 2024-25. He broke both school and conference single-season record for 3-pointers (127).
 
Bashir connected on a career-high 10 3-pointers in his 38-point performance against Rutgers on Nov. 18, 2024. The 10 treys tied for the second-most in Monmouth school history.
 
He made at least 5 3-pointers in 12 games, while he had 8 triples in back-to-back games vs. Northeastern (2/24/25) and Elon (2/27/25).
 
Bashir has made 178 3-point field goals in his career on 38.4 percent shooting, which is nearly 3 made 3-pointers per game.
 
  1. Bashir won several awards as a sophomore at Monmouth.
 
Bashir was honored with several individual awards in 2024-25, including First Team All-CAA accolades. He became the fourth sophomore in school history to earn First Team honors and the first since 2017. He was also selected as the USBWA/Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week on Nov. 19, 2024, after his career-high 38-point performance against Rutgers.
 
Bashir became just the third Monmouth player to earn All-MET First Team honors, a squad that included Rutgers' Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper, Seton Hall's Isaiah Coleman, St. John's Zuby Ejiofor, R.J. Luis Jr. and Kadary Richmond and Princeton's Xaivian Lee.
 
Bashir was also twice named the CAA Player of the Week on Nov. 18, 2024, and March 3, 2025.
 
  1. Bashir played at Monmouth College in the CAA.
 
Bashir played in 66 games with 32 starts in his two seasons (2023-25) at Monmouth, which is located West Long Branch, N.J. The Hawks play in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA), which includes the likes of Towson, UNC Wilmington, College of Charleston and William & Mary. He was coached by King Rice, who while as an undergraduate at North Carolina, was coached by Tar Heel assistant and K-State alum Bill Guthridge.
 
Bashir played against current teammate Khamari McGriff while he was at Monmouth and McGriff was at UNC Wilmington. Bashir had 18 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds but McGriff and the Seahawks won the game, 64-55.
 
  1. Bashir has a twin brother who also plays college basketball.
 
Bashir has a twin brother, Abdul, who was the top scorer (27.2 ppg.) in the junior college ranks at Casper College in Casper, Wyoming before transferring to Auburn for the 2025-26 season.
 
Bashir and his brother were born in Minnesota to Somali parents. He was raised just 3 hours from Manhattan in Omaha, Neb., before prepping at PHHoenix Prep in Arizona.
