CARY, N.C.- Junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav advanced to the singles qualifying bracket of the ITA All-American Championship at Cary Tennis Park, reaching the second round on Tuesday (September 23).
Chogsomjav, a native of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, secured her first ranked win of the year on Monday (September 22) during the first round of the bracket. Against preseason #56 Gianna Oboniye from Mississippi State Chogsomjav was victorious in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
On Tuesday, in her fifth match in four days of the tournament, in the second round against Stanford's #90 Alyssa Ahn she fell short in the first set before retiring due to injury in the second, the score 1-6, 1-4.
Chogsomjav started the tournament in the pre-qualifying bracket on September 20, proceeding to win three straight matches. With doubles partner Zhanel Rustemova, ranked preseason no. 79, they went 1-1 over two days including a ranked win over NC State's no. 73 ranked duo.
Next up on the Wildcats' fall slate is the Milwaukee Tennis Classic (September 25-28) at Western Raquet Club in Milwaukee, Wis., and the Husker Invitational (September 26-28) in Lincoln, Neb., at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center.
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On the strong start for Maralgoo Chogsomjav…
"Great week of tennis by our two ladies with Maggie in singles and playing with Zhanel in doubles. Not easy starting our fall season with a national tournament but our ladies were up for the challenge. Couldn't be more proud of Maggie. Picking up four singles wins including a ranked win was awesome in her first competition back. She definitely picked up where she left off last season."
On the first matches for doubles partners Maralgoo and Zhanel…
"Zhanel and Maggie competed really well in doubles. Especially with this being their first time playing together as partners. Picking up a ranked win over NC State showed that we're doing the right things to lead to future doubles success."
