Five Cats competed in one singles match each in Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The K-State women's tennis team competed on Friday (October 2) in day one of the Hoosier Classic at the IU Tennis Center. Due to weather and court conditions, only singles matches took place with all five Wildcats competing once during the day.
Â
Two Cats, sophomore Diana Smolinska and freshman Sabrina Balderrama found success on day one, including a three-set match victory for Smolinska. The native of Kharkiv, Ukraine, faced Notre Dame's Esther Vyrlan, almost sweeping her opponent to start before encountering resistance in a 4-6 second set. Smolinska bounced back in the final set to become victorious at 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
Â
Balderrama also won her match going back and forth versus Elisabeth Dunac from the hosting Hoosiers with a 6-4, 6-4 final score.
Â
In their first matches of the fall, sophomore Varya Bernovich and senior Margaret Jaraczewski both fell just shy of a win. Bernovich battled to a high scoring second set against the Fighting Irish's Bianca Molnar but was unable to force a third set at 3-6, 5-7. In her first match in a year, Jaraczewski encountered Indiana's Mansi Vadyala where she fell short in a 3-6, 4-6 battle.
Â
Freshman Marta Leon faced Jennifer Florea from Purdue where she earned a couple points but could not string together any in the second set, losing 2-6, 0-6.
Â
On Saturday (October 3) teams will participate in two doubles matches and another round of singles play. K-State's doubles pairs are Balderrama and Bernovich and Leon and Smolinska.
