K-State Sophomores Lead Cats During Round One

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Kansas State men's golf team, led by three solid sophomore performances, finished round one of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in fifth place on Saturday at the par-72, 7,991-yard Blessings Golf Club.

The Cats ended the day with a total of 8-over par 296, leaving them five shots behind fourth place Southern Miss.

"It was kind of an up and down day for us," said head coach Grant Robbins. "We got off to a little bit of a slow start, then we started to gain some momentum on our last nine. Unfortunately, we gave away some on the last hole. Overall, I thought we did a good job of staying in the present and battling through some adversity. There are a lot of holes left. We just have to keep grinding away at it."

Ville Virkkala, a native of Espoo, Finland, finished round one in the top spot on K-State's scoring lineup, shooting a round of even-par 72. A strong front nine score of 2-under par with three birdies helped land the sophomore in a tie for 11th on the individual leaderboard through the first 18 holes.

A product of Cambridgeshire, England, sophomore Oliver Toyer posted a first-round score of 1-over par 73, as he is tied for 19th place following the first round.

Another sophomore, Octavio Laurent, shot a 2-over par 74 on day one, landing the Bordeaux, France, native in a tie for 22nd after round one. A pair of birdies on an even-par back nine helped the former NCAA Division II champion to a strong comeback.

Rounding out the scoring lineup for the Wildcats on day one was Erik Sabelström Holmberg, who finished the first 18 holes at 5-over par 77. Junior Fionn Dobbin ended round one with a score of 6-over par 78. The junior finds himself in a tie for 37th going into Sunday's second round.

Host school Arkansas holds a 13-shot lead at 15-under par 273, while Southern Miss' Benjamin Fernandez is the individual leader by one shot at 6-under par 66.

The Wildcats continue the Blessings Collegiate Invitational with the second round on Sunday. Live results are available on SCOREBOARD Powered by Clippd.
