Three doubles and three singles victories wrapped up day two in Indiana
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The K-State women's tennis team continued competition in the Hoosier Classic on Saturday (October 3) with two rounds of doubles matches and one singles match for all five Wildcats to total six victories at IU Tennis Center.
Â
With two doubles teams competing in two matches each, the Cats won three of four matches. The pair of freshman Sabrina Balderrama and sophomore Varya Bernovich were successful in both of their matches, including the second match of the morning against the hosting Hoosier's Elisabeth Dunac and Hi'Ilani Williams where they won a high scoring set at 7-5.
Â
Freshman Marta Leon and sophomore Diana Smolinska went 1-1 while competing together. In their first match against Sophia Holod and Jessica Kovalcik from Notre Dame, the pair fell just short in a high scoring tiebreaker at 6-7 (4-7) but bounced back and almost left the Fighting Irish's Skye Madatali and Esther Vyrlan scoreless with a 6-1 win.
Â
Each Wildcat also battled in singles matches as three women had continued success individually, including in two three-set matches. After losing her first match on Friday, Bernovich clinched a win while facing Clement again. She started the match strong, not allowing her opponent a point but faced more resistance in the second set at 4-6 after falling short she battled back and only allowed one more point for a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory.
Â
Senior Margaret Jaraczewski also bounced back after a day one loss, successful this time over Avery Voss from Miami (Ohio). The first set concluded in a high scoring tiebreaker where Jaraczewski fell just short at 6-7 (5-7) but she marched back and maintained momentum through the next two sets with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3 final score.
Â
Leon encountered an easier match as she swept Iowa's Sally Xu in similar scoring sets after allowing just one point apiece at 6-1, 6-1.
Â
The final day of the Hoosier Classic concludes on Sunday (October 4) with another round of doubles and singles matches for all Wildcats.
