Balderrama and Bernovich end the weekend with three victories
BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The K-State women's tennis team finished the third and final day of competition in the Hoosier Classic on Sunday (October 4) at the IU Tennis Center with a doubles pair winning their bracket after three victories.
Â
Freshman Sabrina Balderrama and sophomore Varya Bernovich concluded their weekend with another win as a duo to take first place in their bracket. In their final match they defeated Purdue's Jennifer Florea and Aleksandra Kyselova to a low scoring 6-2 victory.
Â
"Great work by Varya and Sabrina to bring home a doubles title from the event," head coach Jordan Smith said. "Especially with that being their first time competing together as a team."
Â
Over three days of competition, the Wildcats collected a 4-2 record in doubles competition and 7-7 in singles play.
Â
Freshman Marta Leon and sophomore Diana Smolinska were tested in a close match against Julie Bedard and Reagan Mulberry from Louisville, the two fell just short at 4-6.
Â
In the last round of singles matches, Leon was victorious in another straight sets sweep, this time over Nina Chavez from Miami (Ohio) with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Senior Margaret Jaraczewski won her match via walkover against the Cardinal's Lika Peresypkina.
Â
Balderrama faced Kyselova for a second time during the day, this time she was only able to string together a point in both sets to lose 1-6, 1-6. In a match versus Louisville's Samaya Smith, Smolinska put up a fight in the first set but lost momentum in the second to fall 3-6, 1-6.
Â
Next on the schedule is the ITA Central Regional Championship for qualifying Wildcats on October 15-19 in Memphis, Tenn., at Leftwich Tennis Center. The following week the Battle for the Boot takes place in Fort Worth, Texas, on October 22-25, hosted by TCU.
