The Wildcats split the weekend 1-1 with a win previously against Tulsa
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- The K-State women's tennis team split the weekend with a 4-1 loss to Arkansas on Sunday (February 8) at Billingsley Tennis Center.
K-State (1-2) dropped the first doubles point of the spring against the Razorbacks (6-0) and while three courts fought into three-set matches, the Wildcats were already down three points.
Facing their first ranked opponent, junior Maralgoo Chogsomjav and freshman Martaa Chogsomjav could not gain their footing against #27 Carolina Gomez Alonso and Anet Koskel for a 2-6 loss in the no. 1 spot. Freshman Sasha Kyselova and sophomore Chanel Rustemova had a slow start against Jimena Gomez Alonso and Brooke Schafer in the no. 2 position, only scoring one point in a 1-6 loss.
Freshmen Varvara Bernovich and Diana Smolinska were down by one in the no. 3 spot, facing Arina Babenko and Alexandra Panagiotidou, the score 3-4 before going unfinished.
Rustemova was the lone singles victory for the Wildcats in the no. 6 position, securing a consecutive win, sweeping J. Gomez Alonso in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In the deciding match, Maralgoo faced #22 Carolina Gomez Alonso in no. 1 singles as well, where she came up short in the first set but battled back for a tiebreaker win in the second. After an almost unanimous tiebreaker at 7-1, Maralgoo started to lose steam and ultimately fell in the final set, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1), 3-6, now 2-4 against ranked opponents.
Two courts were in the middle of a third set after both battling into high scoring tiebreakers in the second. In the no. 2 spot, Kyselova started off with a quick first set over Schafer but in the second she could not clinch the match with a 2-7 tiebreaker score. The two were nearing the last set with Kyselova leading before going unfinished at 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 5-4.
Martaa faced a similar scenario versus Koskel in the no. 3 position, claiming the first set but faced a lengthy tiebreaker in the second. Continuing to play until a two point advantage was secured by Koskel at 13-11, the third set had got underway before stoppage time with a score of 6-3, 6-7 (11-13), 1-2.
Smolinska and Bernovich in the no. 4 and 5 spots, respectively, both fell 4-6 in their first sets and could not sustain momentum in the next. Facing Panagiotidou, Smolinska continued to battle but saw a duplicated final score of 4-6, 4-6. Bernovich competed against Babenko where she could not gain her footing for a 4-6, 2-6 final.
The Wildcats begin a five-match home stand on Friday (February 13) starting with Wichita State (6-3) at Peakform Sports & Wellness Center at 4 p.m.
FROM THE COURTS
Head Coach Jordan Smith
On competing against Arkansas…
"Have to say this was not the best environment I've coached a team in but we knew it was coming. One of those weird moments where yes we lost this match but we won in so many more areas. I'm really proud of my young team for remaining strong despite all the shenanigans. We're getting better each day and looking forward to finally playing at home next week."
