Prior to coming to Manhattan, Johnson was an offensive graduate assistant at Boise State during the 2022 season, helping the Broncos earn a 10-4 record and a victory in the Frisco Bowl. Prior to his time in Boise, he spent three seasons at Sacramento State as an offensive quality control coach and graduate assistant.

Johnson played collegiately at California, seeing action in 31 games. He earned his bachelor’s degree in legal studies from the University of California-Berkeley in May 2017.
