A former football student-athlete who both trained under and worked for Trumain Carroll, J.R. Griffin is in his first season as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at K-State in 2023.
 
Most recently the Director of Strength and Conditioning at McNeese State over the past year, Griffin began his playing career at Air Force before transferring to SMU. The running back saw action in 12 games in 2018, while he earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors.
 
Griffin started his career in 2019 working as an assistant strength coach with Mustang football in addition to the women’s rowing and track & field programs before moving to Arkansas to serve as an administrative coach under Carroll. He spent two seasons in Fayetteville before going to McNeese State as first an associate director before being promoted to director in January 2022.
 
Griffin obtained his undergraduate degree in applied physiology and sport management from SMU in May 2019. He then earned his master’s of kinesiology with a concentration in exercise science from Arkansas in December 2020. He and his fiancé, Rachel Barnes, will marry in July.
